In the spirit of boasting one's new wares here on CGN, I submit this 35 Whelen "Rat Gun" (ala Rat Rod). I think it runs a bit counter to all the pretty guns one sees on the interweb these days.
Built on a Remington Sportsman 78 ADL action (1980s M700 pre-SPS cheapo offering) with a new 23" Lilja 1:12" SS bbl in an old Brown Precision stock. This is the fourth rifle I've had that stock on starting with a used 7Mag that was re-tubed to 358NM by Bevan King. That 358 was sold to a friend who decided a McMillan was in order so the stock was sold back and was put on an 30/06 only to finally become this current 35 Whelen. (This has become my all time favourite stock over all others that I have owned. I wish I had a bunch more of them.) The butt was extended 1/2" to bring it up to 13.5" and given the BDL treatment. I started to refinish the stock at one point and found some yellow under and couple layers of brown and black paint. Kinda ugly, so I left it as-is. Scope is an old Vari-X III 2.5-8 complete with gloss finish, ring marks and friction adjustments < gasp
>. Paid a mere $150US for the scope, so it's cheap enough be a a part of this project. The Weaver R&B are uber FUDD and were a no brainer. I just hope I can get all this antiquated optics gear to work enough to place a bullet even remotely near a target.
Weighs 7.5lbs as shown and handles quite nicely.
Go ahead, tell me it's ugly and make my day. I like it!
