308 vs 7-08 for all round hunting...

Het the 7mm-08...

I have shot bears, ,moose, deer, etc. with mine, and no issues.

Factory offerings are wonderful for this calibre, though I was reloading my own.

I would not hesitate to shoot to 500 yrds on a deer, if you are capable...

A wonderful cartridge...

My Favourite bullets are the 140 gr TSX up around 2900 fps... the 120gr TSX just a little faster and 100 gr Sierra HP flying at about 3200 fps

Personally when you add every thing up I would go with a good quality 308 cal
rifle and a good scope you will not regret it. Undisputed in this range of caliber
performance .

Really, if the 7-08 had come along before the 308 the 308 would have suffered the same lukewarm reception the the 338 FED and 358 WIN did. The minute advantages are more than off set by the increased recoil when shooting bullets of equal sectional density.

The accuracy of either cartridge is way beyond sufficient for any hunting situation.

yea, but let's not forget the origins of the 308- it's a shortened '06- they wanted to use as many components as possible in common with the garand- basically, what they did was look at the garand, realize what the shortcomings were, and update the cartridge to have the same velocity as the 06 AT THE TIME- it was b/c of the modern propellants they could SHORTEN the case by half an inch- you have to go back to the days of the 30/40 krag and change that to a 7x57 and then generate your "family of improvements" from there

If it can't be decided which one works better on game then maybe there is no difference.

It is like saying what half ton hauls a bag of potting soil better. If it goes from point A to B, guess what, it worked.

oh, I don't agree Kelly! I'd favor the Ram to go from A to B and back to A again.......... many times. :p

Aww...but did you measure the force the newspaper recieved from the corisponding loads?
My bet is the energy contained in the heavier bullet would provide a measure of shock not provided by the lighter bullet!

If there is a giant gaping hole through both lungs, does the "shock" of a bigger bullet really matter?

:p

If this was the precision rifle forum I'd say you may have a place to start your argument.

For a hunting rifle in either 7-08 or 308 you are going to wear out your trigger finger well before your rifle gets to the point it won't be accurate enough to take game.

As I said previous it is a non-issue to the debate here.

Just curious, anybody ever kill something with a 7-08 or 308 and say "dammit , dat dere animal ain't dead anuff, shoulda brang the bigger gun!"

as for two-dogs Ram comment, I must keep quiet, I work at a Dodge dealer but I don't drive one!!!

May not be a issue for some but a fact .

It's not a argument starter just a fact of the small bore hot loads .

The 7mm-08 Remington is a rifle cartridge that is almost a direct copy of a wildcat cartridge developed around 1958 known as the 7mm/308. As these names would suggest, it is the .308 Winchester case necked down to accept 7 mm (.284) bullets with a small increase in case length. Of cartridges based upon the .308, it is the third most popular, behind only the .308 itself and the .243 Winchester.[1] In 1980, the Remington Arms company popularized the cartridge by applying its own name and offering 7mm o8 so it's been around for awhile 32 years as 7mm08 and 54 years in devlopment .

Ok, so what was the point of this?

Testing your copy-paste skills??;)
