308 vs 7-08 for all round hunting...

Sorry the score he shot

Winning Performance: Scoring 452 points out of a possible 475, Stuart won the F-TR Euro Championship convincingly, finishing 10 points ahead of F-TR runner-up Adam Bagnall (also from Great Britain). Stuart also had the highest V-Bull count with 33.

Step one: choose two cartridges, as similar as possible, to compare to each other. Preferably, they should be based on the same case (270 vs 30-06, 7mm-08 vs 308, etc).

Step two: ask for advice on which is "better."

Step three: make popcorn. It'll go for 20 pages of replies, easily.

Just sharing the pop corn

A few years ago, I started a thread about "7-08- the new 30-06?"

I took 7mm 140gr TSX bullets and loaded them to typical 7-08 velocities, and 200gr Sierra Game Kings and loaded them to typical 30-06 velocities.

Then I shot them into newspaper.

I don't have the time, energy or inclination to do a complete scientific study, but here is what I came up with:

The 30-06 loaded with 180gr or 200gr bullets are a proven killer of game, and probably a good "standard" to start with. I don't think anybody would argue that shooting a moose or elk in the lungs with a 180 or 200 gr bullet from a 30-06 would not be an effective killer.

What happened in the test? The 7-08 with the premium bullets penetrated just as much (if not more) and left just as good a "wound channel" in the newspaper as the 200gr 30-06 rounds.

Would a 180gr TSX from the 30-06 penetrate more than the 7-08 140gr TSX? Probably, but that is not the point. The point is that most hunters would not feel uncomfortable shooting a moose with a 200gr cup and core bullet from a 30-06, and if the 140gr TSX will do the same, then there is no reason the 7-08 will not perform just as well.

It's not hard to conclude that any comparable bullet form a 308 and a 7-08 will create virtually identical results. And if a premium bullet from either will do the same as a 200gr cup and core bullet from a 30-06, the I would say both are well suited to accomplishing the same tasks.

SO pick what you whatever you want. As I said- the moose and deer will not know the difference between the 2.

When your done bickering about this can anyone tell me what's better. 300 win mag or 7mm rem mag?...

I've used both quite a bit, and they both kill very well, close up and far away.

If I was hunting grizzlies with either, I would probably take a 300 because it's using bigger bullets, but that is likely more for physiological reasons rather than practical reasons, as I've seen grizzly bang flop with a 7RM. For deer moose, elk, black bears and grouse, it's a toss up for most hunting situations under 400 yards.

Hmmm I actually made my choice a few weeks back... 300 WM... Would you suggest an accubond er perhaps a partition fer rough grouse?... Can't seem to find monolithic solids in .308 210gr but I just started lookin fer the next upland game season...

Last time I shot grouse with a 300 I used 180gr Partitions. 4 of them charged....I dropped 3 with head shots. If I hadn't been using premium bullets, I may have died. Or just gone hungry. :p

Really? The extra $20 for a box of premium bullets is a deal breaker for you? Compared to all the other costs of a hunting trip - even a low budget one, this is really a big deal?

Well yes it is.
If you only hunted with one cartridge I guess it would be minor.
I have approx 20 diff caliber rifles...start multiplying!
Besides why would a guy switch to a more expensive alternative when the items that's been in use for 100 yrs works just fine:confused:

Aww...but did you measure the force the newspaper recieved from the corisponding loads?
My bet is the energy contained in the heavier bullet would provide a measure of shock not provided by the lighter bullet!

I have taken 4 moose with my 7mm-08 with 140gr tsx so far. From what I have seen there was know difference in performance from my 7mm-08, 7mm rem mag or 300 win mag on moose. So to say a 308 can do stuff a 7mm-08 cant is a pile of bull crap.

Both are good cartridges buy whatever one you like.

And that ends this discussion. It's been proven now there is "know" difference in performance, to say different is a pile of bull crap (pun intended).

7-08 is an excellent round. There are rifles that shoot very well in that caliber.
I'm most def getting one (rifle) for my daughter as her hunting rifle.
