308 vs 7-08 for all round hunting...

Ok, but which one makes animals more dead, you still haven't made that conclusion.

I'd also be careful of some of the ladies out there, no matter what they wield they can shoot!!Much better than I can anyways!

Just to show you it's been around but has not taken over. But I here it's becoming popular with the Ladies .

If this was the precision rifle forum I'd say you may have a place to start your argument.

as for two-dogs Ram comment, I must keep quiet, I work at a Dodge dealer but I don't drive one!!!

so, the truth comes out finally! I truly did believe the other fella when he said that you were a full time Combine Pilot out there around PA! I guess it's ok to drive your John Deere to work! Did I tell ya, I used to live in Melfort? By the way, I still gotta get around to using your 7mm-08 reloading data.

Yup, I do remember!!

Can't deny who I really am!:p

Should I post my 150gr load that is side by side with some 150 gr 30-06 loads!!!OH MY!!:stirthepot2:

WOW! 14 pages of replies in only a couple of days. Obviously a topic of this sort is more popular than hockey, religiona and politics all rolled into one! :D

A hunting buddy chose 7mm-08 for the lighter recoil. If your wife is a bit lighter or recoil shy she'll like the lesser shoulder punch of the 7mm-08 over the .308.

As for how effective it is for the animals you are after you can see by the hearty opinions both ways that it's a rather split decision. But I'd say that the point is that the "little" 7 HAS been effective at taking down all the animals it sounds like you're after.

As for ammo it is out there. But it sure isn't as common as the .308. So shop around or order it in and stockpile it.

I should add that I'm a 7mm-08 owner. In my case the bullets are coming out of a fairly lightweight TC Encore. But I can shoot all afternoon without a care with this mild a recoil. It's really only a bit more than a .30-30 from a lever rifle. Yet we've got a 7mm bullet sizzling along at a pretty good clip.

Frankly you're missing out by not reloading. Thanks to the popularity of some other 7mm cartridges there's a bucket load of really nice bullets out there. And it's just not that complicated or expensive to set up a single stage press for reloading a hundred or so rounds at a time. I've done it and did around 100 very easily over an evening with lots of time left over to watch a movie before bed. A basic but nice rifle round reloading setup can be put together for between $250 to $300 for the first caliber and from there it's just the cost of new dies and $10'ish for a new plate to hold them.

I have to kick myself in the butt, and get on the reloading band wagon... $45 bucks for a box of Nosler Accubond's and the odd one gets used to behead a grouse. $2.25/lb. if I make it with the first one :shotgun:

The Bigger hole of course. That was not a shot on the ladies and Yes I agree have seen some of your groups LOL .

I am getting a label here as a Tractor Captain who can't shoot!!What have I done?

Ok I have just started working on a two 7mm08’s trying some different
loads .One of our members has sent me some of your researcher. I
could tell you have worked hard on this caliber and reloading for it .
I plain on using some of your info to find the sweet load for the 08’s I am
loading for. Have had some good groups just need to find the sweet one
for theses rifles . Both the ones I have been working on belong to ladies.
that have shot game . Thanks for sharing the info .

One thing I have found is that use components that are easier to tune or are more forgiving, say using something with the tangent ogive (SMK's) that is less sensitive to seating depth changes, and powder that is less susceptible to temperature extremes.Stick to the 140's for hunting bullets, you can get some very high BC bullets if you are wanting flat shooting and retained energy at distance.

I am in the same boat looking at a new rifle. Have a 300 wsm and 243, thinking of going with the 7-08 just cause I don't have a 7mm. In reality there is not much diff between the 7-08 and 308. The one nosler custom load pushing a 150 Accubond at 3000 fps is pretty neat though, not sure most hand loaders would match it. either way you go will be awesome.

Sadly I have been mistaken on the 7-08 credentials!
I had no idea the 7-08 was the full equal of a 300WM

Oh you didn't hear the news.

The 260/7mm08's are all better today at killing and game retrieval than the .300 Winchester Magnum. You can buy the special stardust at any gunstore and just sprinkle it on the bullet tips before shooting at your trophy bull moose, just over yonder across the lake!

Seriously, the 7mm/08 and .308 are for the most part twins. I prefer the .308, especially in short carbines, but would do any job with the 7mm/08 as well.

Now,........why the hell does the 300WM end up in these 260/7mm08 discussion threads????

A guy at our camp killed a moose stone dead with a 243, so I guess you can put it in the same catagory as a 7-08 & 300wm then.

Ya, ya and some girl killed an elk at 780 yds with a 243 blah...blah...blah

Seems to me the OP asked about 7mm-08 vs 308 win, which I do believe we have MOSTLY agreed are 2 peas from the same pod.
