410. Love or hate

My grandfather knew a guy who hunted deer with rifled slugs from a 410 (back in the ol days when it was legal)

About the same performance as a 40cal roundball from a muzzleloader. The 410 is legal in some states and is used quite well if shots are close. Inside traditional bow hunting range i see no reason why it wouldnt work well if you took broadside double lung shots. Yes theres better options but a 40cal hole before expansion thru both lungs is going to leave a mark that a bandaid cant fix

An item that accompanied me on yearly Moose trips was a little Ranger .410 single shot. Usually for the trips back to camp, it sat on the dash of the truck for Ruff Grouse ditch chickens. Served me VERY well keeping us supplied with Ruff camp meat over the years. Then, a few years back I got the opportunity and replaced it with a Savage 311 SxS. The Savage is good but I do miss and regret parting with that little Ranger .410 single shot. May have to start a quest for another.

I have a 410 bolt, got it for grousing. It's killed grouse. I am intrigued by both the prospect of a 410 revolver, and reloading 410 in brass shells.
That's said i prefer neck shooting grouse with .22.

My 22 and 17hm2 are perfect for grouse as is my jrc 9mm for head shots. I have a 9mm flobert but lack the faith of its killing power with #10 shot

Id like a revolving 410 but dont want the gas splash on the forearm from the cylinder gap

I have had loads of fun shooting clays with my .410 -- the extra challenge keeps it interesting. But, I would take my 20 ga hunting before I grabbed my .410. I'm too lousy a shot to trust myself to consistently hit a live bird with the .410.

I have a collection of Iver Johnson Hercules doubles (12, 16, 20 & .410) and the little .410 is my favorite for grouse. Hope to pass these on some day as there aren't many Canadian made firearms like these.
