I wanted to fit an AK magazine to my SKS.
Does anyone know where I can get one pinned to 5 rounds? or if I can get one that isn't pinned and pin it myself? I'm not sure I want to bother with one of those plastic TAPCO mags as it wont fit easily into my ATI Strikeforce stock.

Alternatively, someone out there has modded the SKS to accept AR15 magazines. I can't figure out how they did it.

Any pointers will be appreciated.

Only SKS-D will accept AK mags.

STANAG mag adapter is a complicated modification, there are no kits for it.

Only SKS-D will accept AK mags..

From all the videos etc online about the conversion, it seems as simple as removing the trigger group and the mag and then reinstalling the trigger group without the mag. The ak duckbill mag is supposed to slap right in.
There is a tapco mag but i'd rather have an original metal one.

I did see a modification vid on someone who had made the SKS work with an AR15 mag. Thats more of what i am interested in.

Why bother? The rifle is easily loaded with stripper clips. A lot faster than changing an empty magazine for a loaded one. Makes as much sense as having an extra magazine for an enfield.

The duckbill mag, is definitely not an ak mag. There are steel duckbills out there. AK mags fit SKSD or mc5d,

Yeah. Hi Cal has some metal AK47 mags that have had the duck bill put on them. they are pricey tho. I think $89

There is one member here who routinely makes "SKS-Ds" out of both Chinese and Soviet rifles. They sell for $450 on the EE when they're available. His name escapes me.

A duckbill magazine is NOT an AK magazine. It is an SKS magazine. The only ones worthwhile are said to be the Tapco 20 rounders; the 30 round steel mags are notoriously unreliable (5 rounds may work ok as the follower isn't going far).

There are at least two forum members who have successfully produced AR15 mag adapters for the SKS. It involves permanently modifying the receiver, as does the SKS-D conversion. The AR mag permits you to use LAR 10-round 7.62 magazines for a legal 10 rounds in your SKS. All of this information can be found in the Red Rifles forum, where this thread belongs.

Did anyone post any details on how they actually did it?

^^ I'm one of those guys....

there's a bit of a write up, it involves an adapter made from a solid block of alu, which is reduced to a 3rd of its weight after hours on a mill, plus milling of the receiver, bolt and the wooden stock.

I've made a few and slowly but surely have another batch i'm doing...

I'm in for 2, with or without modified receiver.

:)

Those are nice looking mags. But I just can't do it at $89, I just can't. Once we are acclimatized to paying that much, there's no going back, lol...And tax and shipping, and that's $115!

For something that sells in the middle east/Africa/Central America for two chickens and a drink of rum!

Just thought I might mention, guys, that we ARE in Canada. We have a 5-round limit on magazine capacity in this country.

Fitting ANY monster mag, whether the ducks like it or not, is a complete waste of time, money and resources.

Besides, the SKS reloads FASTER from a Charger (which most of you guys call 'stripper clips'.

Yes, the Chargers hold 10 rounds. If you have a hacksaw or a Dremel tool, you just cut them in half, break the sharp edges with a file or emery cloth..... and you get 2 for the price of 1!

And they work just fine.

Save your money and get another rifle or some more ammo.

BTW, if you guys are going to post in th MILSURP forum, you might try shooting a Milsurp rifle in Milsurp condition. Many in this forum spend a lot of time and money UNdoing the efforts of Bubba and his idiot cousin. Those two don't come here because they have already wrecked 80% of the Lee-Enfields in existence and 90% of the Mausers. I hear you find them over in Red Rifles these days, wrecking SKSs and SVTs and Moisin-Nagants.

But if you DO try out an SKS in full-military condition, you will find that the Russian Army KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING when they built the SKS. It is ALMOST idiot-proof, it is as reliable as a ROCK and it will take almost any amount of abuse and rotten weather..... and still function perfectly. That ugly fully-enclosed magazine keeps out a lot of rain, snow, ice and garbage and those icky uncool laminated-hardwood stocks don't shatter in 40 below, either.

Give it a try.

You just might enjoy it.

Let's not start a lynching mob over a damn SKS, the guy just wanted to swap the magazine on one dime a dozen SKS.

I suppose I could make some rude remarks about Call of Duty players who wait 2 hours in line to buy a children's game.... but I won't.

BTW, your punctuation sucks. You missed a comma, two periods and a capital letter: four mistakes in six words.....

If you wish to disagree with me, you are free to do so. Perhaps you can tell me how all of this aftermarket crap IMPROVES the basic SKS rifle.

I'm waiting.......

Man purists are long winded lol

He's right though. Do you think it would be ok to bubba a military configuration Lee Enfield today? I just spent the last month and a half looking for a decent Lee Enfield that wasn't sporterized and all of them have been bubba'd. I finally found one and I had to pay a pretty penny for it and a long 6hr drive to go get it. Most people who put these stocks and gadgets on the SKS keep the original parts but then misplace them. Give it time and people will be all over the place looking for SKS and Mosin Nagant in original configuration and will be swearing the names of those who bubba'd the SKS rifles of today. Maybe not soon since hoarders have already started anticipating that the SKS will go way up in value once Bubba is finished with the SKS and Mosin. I don't see why the SVT-40 will get bubba'd but then again, I've seen a few home jobs and I've caught wind that someone is making an aftermarket stock for the SVT-40.

Until the day comes that the 5rd limit is removed, this is completely a waist of time. I bet you someone with a Lee Enfield could shoot more rounds per minute than someone with a 5 rounds semi auto. I've already tired a Tapco stock and Tapco mag on an SKS and it didn't go over well. The safety didn't work anymore in the new stock so I had to remove the safety, the bolt wouldn't hold open on the last round, the gun would pop out of the stock every few shots, the tapco mag was a pain in the ass to remove, and you could no longer use stripper clips to reload. In the end, I took all that crap off and went back to original. Original functioned way better and something that works is a thing of beauty. A fatal note about the Tapco stock and mag combo is if you get a jam that you can't pull the bolt back and you need to pull the mag out to clear it, you're dead in the water because you can't pull the Tapco mag out unless the bolt is open.

What part of legal 10 round magazine conversion did you fail to understand?

Look me in the eye and tell me you can charge 10 rounds into an SKS faster than I can drop the stanag mag and insert another one and I'll call you a liar.

In the end you guys with minty mil slurps should be laughing every time a bubba plays with a gun as it increases the condition of YOUR rifle.

Smellie, I value your opinion and think of you as a walking history encyclopedia, but as I'm sure you know, SKS-d already uses removable mags. So even the manufacturers tried to improve the deficiencies of the design. I'm sure the coming of the ak47 with removable mags was one of the reasons the SKS was removed from service. It works yes, but if I can get rid of 5round rule and legally carry 10 rounds. I believe some modifications are worthy.

I regress as my magazine conversion was originally posted in the Red rifles section over a year ago and I never came and posted here due to knowing how you guys feel about it so I hope than any further discussion can be carried out over there.
