Anybody hunting in Canada with 9.3x62

After many decades I then to think of 9.3x62 as my rabbit gun ... use to play with so many calibres and pay the rent of gunshops now I am down to a handful. In Canada we are lucky, just go into a shop and buy whatever you want. In many countries one has to justify owning a calibre. As if it’s more deadly as a firearm if it’s more powerful. I wonder what gives to police that idea ...

A couple of target results using Lapua 285gr reloads:

First result CZ 550 FS 5 rounds 100yds

CZ550 FS 200yds. 3 shot 1" group

ZG47 and BRNO 600 were almost identical results, under 0.50" at 100yds

I have found the cheap 285 gr Prvi to be very accurate. Similarly the 270gr Speer. Both affordable options.

It's metricer. And has better bullet selection.

And, for the record, in Canada it is called the 366 Wagner, not 9.3x62.

I was looking around a bit, and I thought that it seemed easier to find a wider variety of .358 bullets. Particularly the lighter weight bullets around the 225-230 gr. range.

Seemed slightly more affordable to shoot also.

TradeEx shows 21 different bullets, though 9 are currently out of stock. You are correct about the light for caliber bullets...not as many of those available for the 9.3 as for the 35. The 9.3 tends to have more available on teh top end rather than the bottom end, likely due to it's history in Africa.

If you're talking about factory ammo, neither can be described as "plentiful". They're actually one of my benchmarks for just how well stocked a gun store is. If they have factory ammo for the 9.3 or the 35 then they should have damn near everything.

No, I don't consider it feasible to shoot very much without reloading, and this medium bore uncommon stuff has gotten ridiculous in price. Been waffling back and forth for some time now on getting a good all around light heavier game rifle.

Taking it all into account with upfront rifle price, ease/cost of making buying brass, and bullet price and availability. Been considering the Whelen, .358 NM, and 9.3x62. The easiest "upfront" cost goes to the 9.3x62, then .358 NM, then Whelen. Making brass for the Whelen and 9.3 would both be "not bad" using 30-06 brass, maybe slightly easier for the Whelen, maybe a bit easier to buy for the .9.3, and then the .358 being fairly easy using either .300 WM, or .338 WM brass, but a bit less "free" .300 WM available. The .358 bores seem slightly more affordable to shoot, and are flatter shooting with good 225 gr. for the Whelen and good 250 gr. for the NM. Though I could probably use the 9.3 quite a bit with cast gas checks..

More confused than ever, but I think I need one of each!

Another 9.3x62 fan here... I blame Ted... :) I bought a nice M98 Husky from him several years ago.

So far nothing has argued with a 250gr TTSX at 2600 FPS. Dead right there, and easy on the shoulder. I even got the special edition Wagner flip-flop recoil pad. Holding up great and works a treat.

Ted and John Barsness.

Or maybe Ted is John Barsness!

Do you have any good pics of your 9.3 BUM? Looks like a beauty.

Probably have some around here that I can post up.

That just doesn't sound right!Laugh2

Some nice RIFLES in this thread, though!

BigUglyMan, was that video on YouTube? Can't view it on my old tablet.

Yes, it's on YouTube but it's marked as private. Maybe that's why.
