bringing together all the 'what should my first hunting rifle be' thread advice

Hi Fergus,

That's a good point. Though the main factor in price is rarity. The cartridges suggested are all pretty common, so things are mostly in the $20-30 range. The rarer of these (though not really rare), for example the 6.5x55 will be more variable - basically normal price in some places, but others may jack the price up. Also, in premium bullets, they'll all run in the $30+ range.

I am looking to buy my first rifle but I have used a few different calibers. I've been trying to figure out what cartridge would be ideal for deer to moose and this helped me out a lot. Thank you

6.5x55 will run 38.00 after taxes at Canadian tire .. 257 roberts is 35.00 after taxes at Canadian tire .. Both nice shooting guns but a little hard around here to find ammo ..

My idea of prices may be a little out of date, as I've been out of the country for a while now... Coincidentally, though, I did find that same price at the Cataraqui Kingston Canadian Tire - around the same time I think Le Barons had Remington 6.5x55 for $22 or so. That's what I was referring to about some of these less common but not outright rare cartridges having kind of variable prices.

I'm an old timer:
I've hard my share of firearms.
You seem to have lots of knowledge of good firearms.
I could not find any fault in your choices.
You choice of scopes is also good.
I've had 222,223,22-250,243, 38-40,44-40,25-20, 280 rem. 7mm Mag, 30-30, 300 sav. 308 win. 30-06,270, 338 mag ETC.ETC,
In my wiser years I'm with 223, 243, 30-30. 308 and 30-06.
Use mostly bolt actions, as I know them to be very accurate.
For scopes I prefer Leupolds and Nikons.
But some cheap Simmons work for me also
To play with I have my lever actions and ease to carry.
Very good advice for a newby and old guys also.

Some very useful tips on calibre selection. I think I'm gravitating towards the .270 Win as a good all round cart for a rifle that will be used both on the range and, at some stage, for game up to deer and for vermin. I'm not looking to kill moose at 500m after all (NS seems a bit wooded for the looong shot).

Through work (Brit and now Canadian Military) I'm used to 5.56 and have shot lots of 7.62 long and .303 Brit in my past.

Thanks again for the thread RG.

I am a newbie! This is the first post I read since grinding through the rules, terms of use, etc.

And my first centerfire was (is) a sporterized Lee Enfield with a 4x Bell on it.

Guys, help me out. Is there any Benelli R1 .308 in black comfortech stocks? Or were the 308s only made in wood?

Excellent post!
Hunted all my life not really into the specifics of the rifles I have used as they have been tools to me. Nice to see a post that puts some perspective into what rifles one should get for themselves.

Hi newbie here and that was a lot of great information. I did LMAO at the 7mm-08 for wives, that is probably going to be my first gun. I am a little timid when it comes to recoil.LOL
