Burlington gun club...5 month wait minimum!!

cp: Once you find a club that supports an encourages shooting,

I wasn't aware that our league dominating Bullseye Pistol, IPSC, Juniors, Airgun and Blackpowder sections were discouraging shooting. But if you're a competitor that is regularly losing to one of our house teams, I could see how you might be discouraged. ;)

it's membership chairman to have a waiting list that long.

The membership director has nothing to do with the new member waiting list; its the law of supply and demand. The CFO insists on a club level safety course, and our all-volunteer team can process about 20-25 per month; 12 courses per year. We'd run more courses, but with all of the Ontario Rifle Association classes, IPSC Line/Range Safety officer courses, Black Badge, Holster qualification and various "irregular" discipline matches (Cowboy Action, Defensive Pistol etc) our classroom facilities are pretty heavily utilized.

Either ways....I don't generally go for organizations that make me feel unwelcome with what I consider to be a overly lengthy process...

We have an extensive series of FAQ's on the club forum that should answer most of your questions and help you to streamline the process. If there are any specific questions I can answer nwills, drop me a PM here at CGN or on the clubs' forum.

I've always looked at it like this...
These clubs are private.
They can do whatever the hell they want and really, I think they should be more selective as to whom they allow to join.
I belong to three clubs including Burlington. They each have their own good and bad aspects, but none of 'em are suffering membership wise.
As for Silverdale being "all that"... I was a member for a couple years and really... It didn't seem all that great at all. Didnt meet my needs so I left.
No big deal.

But skeetgunner(I think) will be along shortly to tell you it is the best club ever!
and
We are certainly not the best club ever.
and
Like I said.......

If reading for comprehension is not your strong suite, perhaps gun ownership is not for you, m'kay? :p Internet forums is serious business, eh? :D

Being a Board member at BRRC and the club webmaster makes me one of their ambassadors/ombudsmen by default. Having a strong sense of humour (and occasionally the absurd) certainly helps.

NEXT TIME AT EESA I'M GOING TO HUG THE RANGE.....Signed up for life never looked back.

A Happy range and club feel like well worn slippers.

Move to Alberta. My club $60.00/yr you get the gate combo, drive in, shoot till your hand is sore, pick up your junk, go home.... Life is good.

Nice conversation although we sending Mr. Miller on world tour to promote safety of all , and he might stop by Alberta if you really insist and hopefully some Cheif's are waiting too be free from their duties
........ Life can be good. :D

I'm currently a member of 2 clubs....silverdale and the grange.
I've done my security level courses and done probation shoots at both clubs.
I have my ATT and everything else.

I looked into membership at the Burlington gun club which is located 15 minutes away from my house and found out that they will not recognize the courses I already did...my letters from my existing clubs indicating that I'm in good standing and that there is no course availability until end of April 2011!!! At which point I can take the course...attend all disciplines over a whole week every evening...and only then is my membership reviewed at a later point for full membership.

Long story short...I would be a full member there sometime end of may or June.....it's December!!!! Seriously?! That's 6-7 months!

They should simply make it an exclusive closed door no new member policy at this point.

Don't mean to say bad things about the organization but anyone who makes it that hard for me to simply give them my money and be given the opportunity to enjoy their facility is in my books not a new business friendly operation!

Looked into joining Burlington.

After I did my research (talked to members on the club premises) I decided there was to much silly politics and bs involved and other clubs had more to offer without having to endure the atmosphere of discontent, bickering and kids stuff.

According to my sources a significant portion of the Burlington membership is fed up with the dictatorial executive.

Two of the people I talked to were Burlington members who wished that they had made a different decision because things have changed for the worse over the past few years at the club. One guy is in the process of joining my club and will quit Burlington after his new membership is finalized.

I joined the shooting sports to have a good relaxing pastime, meet new and interesting people in a spirit of mutual comradery and to get away from stress rather than enter an arena of animosity, conflict and discontent.

I disagree !

This is NOT new .

I saw that decline back in 1974 !
I put up with it for a few years until I found a happier club. ;):D

I think that some in this thread would see this as the exact attitude that will eventually kill the shooting sports in Canada. If we think that all of our clubs have enough members then we will remain in a position of being in a severe minority in Canada. If this does not change we will all be sipping our drinks longing after the good old days when we could actually go to the range and shoot. I can hear it now "really son - it was a really enjoyable past time - to bad you are stuck pointing a plastic gun at a computer monitor".

Really? I think you need better sources. In the 6 years I've been on the BoD, the board has been acclaimed; nobody else wanted to step up and do the job. Hardly seems like an environment where a "significant portion is fed up with the dictatorial executive." Of course, if you talk to the .5% of the members that do have a beef with the BoD (legitimate or not), you might get a different perspective. It really depends on your sample size, I guess.

You'd be welcome on Rifle Night then. We're a fairly gregarious group. Most of the other nights I attend are the same.

I saw that decline back in 1974 !

And we're still here and growing too. Who'd a thunk? And because we're protected from urban encroachment until 2077, I suspect we'll be around long after many of the regional clubs are paved and turned into subdivisions.

Club rules

We are our own worst enemies. Burlington is a "safer" gun club I suppose? The stigma and the bull$hit in the firearms community is stifling.

We are Wendy's best allies.

Right you are Griff. Far to much politics in many clubs and it drives good people away from the sport. I think that often its all about the " we run the show " mind set of club committee members. If new members prove themselfs
to be safe and have the courses to back it up then go at it

+10

Attitudes need to change if we want our community to be stronger and bigger.....God knows we need a large united front
