Colt Canada C8 versus Everybody Else!

So, the accuracy is the same as a $1000 Ar15?

I'll have to borrow a $1000 gun to compare. I suspect the CC barrels are of a higher quality than one might get on a $1000 rifle and i would think the overall reliability will be much higher. I have seen a few broken bolt-heads and other parts on a well known Cdn manufactured $1000 AR.
Quality also extends to longevity and reliability... those features cost money.

Everyone builds a good AR these days. If you have to have a Colt I can understand that. Some people insist it isn't a motorcycle unless it is a Harley Davidson too. Far as I'm concerned though - it is on par with guys like STAG, Bushmaster, etc.
The cool kids I see seem to be saying that if you have to have the absolute best AR out there, it is made by a company called LWRC. If I understand the company correctly the bulk of the costs are for some exotic materials of construction and extensive QA/QC. I suppose a gun like that would make sense to the Navy SEAL that IS going into the brown stuff, and WILL be shooting his way out of it, possibly under the worst conditions possible. For range work, gophers and targets I can get by with a good quality gun. You can't go wrong if you stick to the mainstream high end vendors and you can get it in any configuration you want. Personally, I would not get hung up on Colt myself.

LWRC was bought out by Colt.

Just thought of something. Do these Diemaco rifles have that weirdo proprietary sort of rail system?

I had a c8a2 and needed to file down the top rail to make an Elcan spectre fit. Diemaco rails aren't the standard size.

C8A2 is the M96 developed for the Danish Army.

Question 1: can you leave the front and rear iron sights on the civilian version when a scope is added? In other words, can I have both sighting systems installed at the same time on the firearm? It would make sense to me to have both in case the scope no longer works and you can use the iron sights as a backup system.

Yes, the rifles come with a Troy fold down rear back up iron sight (BUIS). If you are using a scope, as long as your mount is high enough, the rear ocular bell should fit over top. For small red dots, most will sit in front of the BUIS on the upper receiver rail. You can decide if you would rather run your rear BUIS up or down then. Personal preference.

On SA20 I have an ElcanOS3.0 which needs to be mounted at the rear of the receiver due to eye relief. I simply mounted the BUIS in front, turned around backwards in a manner similar to the fixed BUIS that is issued to the CF. It is roughly zeroed at 25yds now but I may change that to either 33 or 50 depending on what my research tells me is optimal. Don't imagine I will ever actually us it but I may as well have it zeroed to something effective just in case.

With any magnified optical sight, you will need to take it off to use the irons. You simply can't see the front sight clearly through a magnified lens (somebody correct me if I am wrong).

Question 2: where are you fellows getting the price list for the C7 and C8, I keep reading references to over priced! Is this information posted on the Internet someplace?

Pretty much all the retailers in Canada (except Wolverine) are charging the minimum price specified by Korth, the distributor. $2,100 for SA20 and $2.400 fo SA15.7

And literally everyone (including us gun plumbers) removes them from C7s and C8s (at least in Valcartier).

If you guys are talking about CF C8s, we never had C8A2s. They were never bought and were never in the system - ever. They are different rifles with different barrels. We've had the C8FTHBs (with the black furniture and no ambidextrous controls) and C8A3s (with the green furniture and the ambidextrous controls of the C7A2).

And yup the top rails on the receivers of the CF rifles sit higher than regular AR-15 top rails. I think this is also true for H&K 416s. This is why A.R.M.S. makes a flip-up rear sight especially for C7s and C8s. If you bought a commercial flip-up rear sight you'd find out that they sit higher than the front sight. From what I saw, judging by pictures only, the rails on the civilian models are the standard AR-15 height and should be fine.

Weaver rail has 14 slots vs. 13 for the 1913 rail. Slots are .178" min. for weaver and .207" min for 1913. Weaver rail is 1.842"-1.856" in height. 1913 is 1.835"-1.845" in height. The SA20 and SA15.7 have a 1913 rail on it with M4 feed ramps.

There you go. :)

I'm surprised that the SA20 and SA15.7 have M4 feed ramps but even my BCM C8 upper with the heavy 15.7" barrel and Simon sleeve has them.

You can get a Colt for $1000 from the States.
And most of the high quality Ar15 are from the States...not from Canada.

NEA is not really the $1000 rifle to compare to, they are closer to Nork then Colt lol
Windham, Colt 6920 from IRUNGUNS, Armalite, Bushmaster, there is a long list of decent $1000.
$2000+ gets you into the higher end manufacturer, that would be much better kit then these offer.

Some lucky owner in the USA.

I have a number of Colts, all cost more than $1000 in Canada. I have Armalite, Bushmasters, Daniel Defence, BCM, ATRS and LMT. I think the best overall value without a doubt is Daniel Defence but I am willing to pay a couple of hundred $ more than the DD to put Canadian made rifles in my collection.
