Do you really need a magnum

Guns are sooooo... extra... passe, gauche really... I sort of agree with Justin, that we should really embrace psychology as a means to convince game animals to embrace their roll as potroast in the communal order of things... hearing protection not only not required but actually counterproductive.

Hope ye weren't wearing pink fuzzy slippers when ye said that. ;)

With respect to rifle cartridges, the term magnum is nearly meaningless. The .350 Remington magnum cartridge has the same powder capacity as a .30/06 and does nothing ballistically that wasn't already done with a .35 Whelen. The .222 Magnum was a significant step up from the .222, but the .223 is the ballistic equivalent yet is not promoted as a magnum. The new Nosler cartridges seem to eclipse the velocities of earlier cartridges of the same caliber, but these are not referred to as magnums. The .458 Winchester Magnum was intended to duplicate the ballistics of the .450 Nitro Express, a non-magnum, but you have to handload to achieve it since factory loads are closer to hot loads for the .45-70, I chronographed 500 gr Federal Safari ammo at 1900 fps. The .416 Rigby is not a magnum, but handloaded produces velocities which would be dangerous to duplicate in a .416 Remington Magnum. If you hunt game in country where a .30/30 is appropriate, chances are a .300 magnum is not. Nothing wrong with the various .300 magnum cartridges, but to exploit the high velocities which make them relevant the rifles are longer and heavier, a disadvantage in thick cover and difficult terrain. The questions that should be asked is what size of game are you hunting, and at what range can you expect to shoot, and what level of recoil can you tolerate? Once those questions are answered, then the best rifle for the job can be determined.

And there you have it... simple.

Very well said. Concisely and precisely.

You’re right I’m not up to date on the oic latest bans, maybe you can enlighten me on the news?

ever heard of rifle producing of 10000 joules of muzzle energy being banned ...the 460 wea mag and many others so they re after hunting rifles already. but it s magnum so who cares lol ...

If you want the same bullets going faster, or heavier bullets going the same speed, or big heavy high SD bullets going any meaningful speed you probably need a magnum.

Agreed... Whether or not "Magnum" is in the name...

But that is not new! And damn I know some want to use rifles with that much energy but really no body need that kind of energy! I know i know!!

You may legitimately decide that you don’t need that kind of energy.

Neither you nor anyone else, especially in government, can legitimately make that decision for another.

My younger brother uses an elephant rifle for whitetail deer, although he bought it for elk.

It does an admirable job, with no more meat damage than my .308.

What I’m saying is I don’t need and and if people think they “need” then fine! Wanting is something different than needing, but we already talked about that in this thread!
And really as far as I’m concern you do what ever you want and it is none of my business!!

funny the 9.3x62 was created to help settlers against marauder animals in germany africa, so it worked great against buffalo, leopard, rhino and elephant ... do you need an elephant gun in the yukon because im telling you that they will not stop at 10000 joules ...

i know it worked well there is no anymore an elephant or a lion here but never let tell someone what you can use or not because they will always find something you do not need ...

There is nothing magical about the 6.5CM. It does what the 6.5x55 has been doing for decades. :)

The old Swede is actually superior IMO. Gun manufacturers are continually trying to reinvent the wheel. Marketing a "new" cartridge to convince hunters they are getting a better round.
I own a couple magnum rifles, a .264 Win mag and a .338 Win mag and like both. But realistically unless you shoot well enough at long range(the majority don't, me included) the .30/06 family of cartridges is all you need. My 2 cents

On a Moose hunt in 2018 I carried my trusty .308Win. Was presented with a *pile* of 400-500m shots on trophy sized bulls but each day we had very significant winds. Given the distance and the crosswinds it was not a shot I was comfortable making (I have no issue out to 500m with sensible winds and my .308W) . I managed to get my moose on the second last day of the hunt. I since bought a .300WM specifically for this reason which will accompany me on all my hunts of this nature going forward.

Environment, terrain and the animals you hunt will dictate your required gear best. I'm not specifically pro or con magnum calibers: I just see them as anther tool in my box.
