Do you really need a magnum

Harsh?

Where have you been?

There is nothing about firearms today that is not political.

Nor did I start the politics, I merely replied to an effusive post about our freedom to choose.

Freedom my ass!

Tell that to those who possess OIC banned rifles that have the capability to project an excess of joules.

At this stage in life, I am unlikely to need one because it is extremely unlikely that I will ever hunt dangerous game in Africa.

But, it should be my choice to do so, but it damned well isn’t.

Feel free to comment, but expect me to become somewhat abusive if you again tell me to post elsewhere.

You be you... you want to bring your message into Hunting and Sporting arms and argue your point?Go ahead... you will come across as a bit frantic. Your call.
I am not going to spread that all over a perfectly civilized discussion.
If you want all here to see that needy side of you... then sound off and get abusive.
Your fans may give you the thumbs up...everyone else will think otherwise.
Your call... Mods, I apologize in advance if you need to disappear a few posts.
This forum is Hunting & Sporting... not trying to mount a Soapbox about political issues.
I expect a scathing rebuttal BTW... expect the sound of Winter Crickets in response....which is what is deserves as a response.
No-one here wants to dance to your tune...wrong forum

Maybe if more hunters were as prickly as CLW.45 concerning their rights there wouldn't be a bunch of hunting rifles on the OIC list, maybe there wouldn't even be an OIC list or a proposed handgun ban. Frankly the "it doesn't affect me" attitude is depressing.

He’s not wrong, not on topic for the thread but not wrong. The doesn’t affect me attitude is is pathetic really, guess what they will start chipping away at next. Those scary magnum sniper rifles.

Simmer down

There’s a difference between “ doesn’t affect me attitude” and thinking someone who believes they “ have to train on the weapons of their enemies” is delusional. In fact saying asinine #### like that makes gun owners sound like whack jobs

You seem to think I’m some fudd but I’ve owned almost every firearm on the oic list

"Do you really need a magnum bow?" twin limb or crossbow, or compound bow? ;)

Ha ha :) no doubt it’s out there alive and well. Compound vs Traditional vs crossbow vs....vs....

I just don’t get how a post goes from where this one started to where it is now. Connor is right we wind up sounding like a bunch of conspiracy theorist nut jobs. Is there a movement to limit the firearms we own? Yes. Would the same people like to take that even further until we have no guns? Probably. Will it be solved or made better by going all tinfoil hat, angry, rebel media on the middle of a thread about the use of certain cartridges for hunting in various parts of Canada? No.

Do I need a magnum? No, I barely hunt big game anymore after getting into bird dogs.

Do I care if people hunt with Magnums? No, break out the .50cal if you wanna lug it around idgaf.

Do I own any magnums? Yes, a 17HMR ;)

Breathe deep, carry on with life it’s just the internet’s. Don’t have a jammer at the keyboard

I couldn’t have put it better

I have been accused of being an insane libertarian and those saying so are probably correct. If I voiced my opinions on gun laws they would seem wildly extreme to even other gun owners. Not my point at all to suggest we don’t “need” or have “right” to own guns. But I am very happy to live in a country where we are generally safe, and school shootings and handgun crimes are basically non existent. I believe this is a matter of our culture not gun laws. As the son of a Swiss person this is really driven home, massive gun ownership there and a culture of recreational shooting that kind of mirrors the states, none of the crime issues.

I hate that the gun community falls victim to this kind of us or them black and white thinking. Not only is that disordered thinking to a massive degree it alienates people we should be educating about our passion for firearms, firearms safety and associated hobbies like target shooting and hunting. Reach out to people don’t drive them away

By the same token people in Russia and China are not our enemies, they are under the heel of the kind of oligarichical government we all hate so much, we should extend them sympathy and support, not associate them with their criminal governments

I bet when op said this was an open ended discussion he didn’t expect this lmao

I agree with both of you! I have a safe(a small one mind you) full of rifles and shot guns… I just got back from out east where my dad gave me 2 rifles and some ammo… jumped on the plane with all of it without any issues!! I really think we are a ways away from the gov to take it all… I might be wrong!

By all means, let’s shut this down!

We can’t have firearms owners expressing their opinions.

The question was, “Do you really need a magnum?”

I was concerned that many answered a question the OP didn’t ask, do I really need a magnum?

As I said in my initial response, I don’t need a magnum but the OP may.

When a response included an effusive statement that we are blessed because we are able to choose, I responded that we have not only lost our choice about magnum versus non magnum, we have had a great many other choices wrested from our hands.

The butt hurt that followed was embarrassing.

However, for those who are more concerned about facts than feelings:

1. The OIC ban on firearms that output too many joules has removed any pretence of magnum vs non magnum choice.

2. The OIC ban on well over a thousand semi auto rifles has removed any pretence of action type choice in hunting or target competition.

3. Long range shooters, no I’m not one, are not sniper wannabes although many would serve admirably in that role.

That those who could not understand those two simple facts were unable to understand that I and others have other firearms needs is hardly surprising.

FWIW, I am an old man who hunts with “Fudd” rifles that were designed and perfected before 1900, specifically 30.30 lever and .308 bolt action rifles.

I have never owned a firearm that is subject to the OIC bans but, unlike those who supported and continue to support previous bans affecting my 19th and 20th Century handguns, fully support the use, carriage, and possession of any firearm by my neighbours.

wish you re right ... but aside of hunting rifles and shotguns, there is handguns and restricted toys those ones are in immediate danger: they will come later for yours ...

Guns are sooooo... extra... passe, gauche really... I sort of agree with Justin, that we should really embrace psychology as a means to convince game animals to embrace their roll as potroast in the communal order of things... hearing protection not only not required but actually counterproductive.
