Enfields

I believe i got a #1mark 3 forend from numrich in the states, also they do come up in the ee but you have to be looking all the time and jump at them. Cheers

Stripped and refinished my No5 Mk1 today. Came out better than I expected.

I would like to "refurbish" the wood on my original No1 MkIII. What are you suppose to do to clean it up. Is it just sanding it down. I read that they were oiled for the finish. Also mine is very dark in colour. Is it suppose to be like that or a lighter brown like the No5 from Lerch641. Tks

It depends on the finish on yours. Mine had a shellac similar to an SKS, so sanding was necessary. Some only need mineral spirits to clean them before being oiled.
Also, some rifles ended up very dark because of the oils used on them, so judge yours accordingly. If you take her apart and the inside is unfinished, that's what you may end up with.

I'm thinking of adding a "shooter" to my small collection. I am looking to get an FTR SMLE so that I don't have to shoot my all matching. Is there a ballpark for how much to pay for one? I'm trying to find out more about FTR's and what to expect...thanks in advance.

Hell, anywhere from $600-1200 depending on factory, year, wood condition, bore, matching numbers, bolt head, etc..lots of variables. As often suggested, if you found one and have questions, get pictures and post them up here with as good a description as possible.

I have had this a long time. Finally finished converting it from a sporter to full wood. A few parts took along time to find. It's in great shape. So far seems to shoot very well. I'll post a picture of the groups at 100 yards next time I take it to the range.
The wood is from the Ishapore model. I still need to figure out the rest of the rifles history.
Tonight I just noticed that ENGLAND is stamped under the serial number on the barrel.
I still have the original stock. I'll check it for markings tomorrow to help me identify more about this rifle.

Matching bolt and receiver.

It's interesting to know as much history on your Lee Enfield as you can. I have always wanted a full wood #1 Mark III. Now I finally finished mine and it's a great shooter too :)

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to identify the markings on this Lee Enfield No.4 Mk1. Hopefully quickly as I have the oportunity to get it shortly if I want it.

MRYT9OS.jpg

Markings appear to be:
2B (or 2R but I think it's a faded B)
839

UV2FUlv.jpg

Markings on stock show:
72 7 (circled)
SWS
2088

I believe the rifle date was 1943, but I cannot confirm this unfortunately.

Does anyone know where this was created? Is it a legit Lee Enfield No4 Mk1 that was used in WWII? I'm thinking it has a lot of mixed parts from multiple rifles, but I can't figure out where they could be from. According to the store, there aren't any other markings on the receiver.

Any ideas on where it was build would be much appreciated. Trying to determine if I should get it for $695 or not. I'm looking for one used in WWII. Doesn't matter by who specifically. I just want to know where it was made.

Thanks for your help!

Looks a legit No4 Mk1...However, the first pic has a rifle with square cocking piece on the bolt and the second pic has the round button style cocking piece...Two different rifles..???
What makes you think its 1943 if there's no other markings to determine that..?
Markings I would like to see are on the left side of the butt wrist / receiver....These markings should determine manufacturer / date.
Markings on butt don't really tell me much...Issued to >>?? / rack numbers...
How's the bore / headspace check out..?
You need a bit more info on this rifle (s) to be sure you want to spend that kind of money...Unless its a Long Branch $695 would seem to be high....

Thank you for pointing that out... The store sent me 5 pics and it certainly does appear to be two different rifles... I'm not sure why they would have done this unless they got in a second in I went there last. Unfortunately I don't have pics of the other side at the moment because they weren't sent to me. However, via email the store said the other side has no markings.

I believe it said 1943 because of a conversation I had when I was in the store last. Unfortunately when I was there, I had little time and didn't pay much attention to the markings (I didn't know what any meant at the time, but have since researched them). Which bolt is the LB version (if either)?

Everything looks to be in great shape from what I saw when I was there though, which is why I figured the price was higher. I haven't seen any other No4 Mk1 in Southern Ontario within a 2 hour drive yet, so I have little reference at this time price wise. The store isn't exactly close, but I may be going there tomorrow to check it out. If it's a Long Branch then I'd snap it up, but otherwise it may have been someone's project and I'm less enthused about that (although it still looks great).

I'd definitely advise to check it out a bit more...I'm concerned there's no additional markings to tell you manufacture / date. If its a Long Branch it should be clearly marked on the left side of the receiver. It would also be nice to have the micrometer rear site and not the 300/600 flip sight, but its no deal breaker if you like the rifle.
Very difficult to tell from the pics but the wood does look original. Barrel bands, front band, sight etc. should have markings on them which would tell you who made them (LB = Long Branch. S=Savage etc. British markings are a little more obscure as lots of different manufacturers of parts)
Chances are its a WW2 rifle, but as mentioned $695 (I would assume tax on top) is high...Lots of No4Mk1(*) come up on EE, so don't rush into this one unless its A1...
