Gun Engraving

This week's contender for "nice rib"

And while I'm at it, this is mostly likely a Diamond Quality Model 375 (with ejectors) or Model 325 (extractors).

Did anyone watch the Winchester 21 two barrel set in Landsborough's Auction? Went for 23k, plus commission, plus tax.
Interesting to compare its engraving and checkering with some of the examples posted in this thread.

Well, it’s all in the eye of the beholder but that Win 21 can hardly get uglier in my opinion. The blued receiver, the garish gold inlay dog. Yuck.

I recently looked at a basic Francotte 28 gauge that had been “upgraded” and was for sale at Pugliese in Duluth. Has been done in the Winchester style….Blued receiver, gold oval circling a flushing grouse. It was hideous. No elegance. Just crass. For the same money I would have preferred the gun in its original state.

What should be evident to people who follow this thread is that the cost of the gun, or it’s desirability among a certain collector group, have little direct connection to beauty and skilled craftsmanship.

Of interest wrt that auction lots #’s 196 Win21, 200 Holland, 205 Osborne 20ga, 209 Beretta, and 295 Browning Bss, all seem to have been sold to the same buyer, and those were only the ones that I saved to watch for interest’s sake, who knows could be more.....maybe a retailer picking up inventory, somebody buying back their own stuff because they didn’t like the prices they were fetching, or maybe ........somebody just got excited 🤪

Yes, quite interesting. All side by sides---no over unders. And diverse makers from England, Italy, USA, and Japan.
Guess he/she just loves side-by -sides. Hard to argue against that fascination.

Yup.
Gotta retract that ‘bidding against oneself’ comment though, on second thought that’s just weird at these kinds of numbers.
Back to engraving…..hope to get some good pics this weekend at the SxS Classic, some great guns always turn up!
