I've been shooting for over 42 years, and the one thing I have noticed is my interests have changed throughout the years. For a while I was only interested in plinking, then I became interested in hunting, a few years later I started shooting Service Rifle and Service Sniper Competitions. A few year later because I was in an area where 25-50 meter ranges were the rule, I got into IPSC for 10 years, change of location I got into 3 gun and World War 2 re-enacting. These days because of age, I shoot Cowboy Action because I don't have to move as far or fast as I did 30 years ago. Shooting is a addictive sport, but as your circumstances change so will your interests. Get an RPAL and buy at least 1 handgun, you won't regret it.
