Least favourite cartridge?

So that makes my 300H&H a better deer caliber than my .308 except for the fact it is about 1.5lbs heavier?

Actually the 308win and 300h&h are the same caliber. As for the weight, either chambering can be had in either lightweight or heavier rifles.

In any case, we are talking Cartridge, not rifle.

I also happen to think that the 303 BR is just about the perfect north americian cartridge and the 270 win the most overated.

It should be what's the least favorite rifle, not caliber.
Of course the commie junk crappola sks is the worst piece of sh!t ever made.:runaway:
You can send all the sks rifles to me, I will never shoot them. They might make an interesting artificial reef though.
I would call it...commie crappola reef.

We'll take that as a vote for the 7.62x39

What is interesting is that the SKS and ther 303 are the same caliber..

And damn! Rollingrocks recent blacktail buck (shot with a single SKS round) sure looks nice.

He is a GREAT blacktail.

I guess that ####ty SKS rifle works just fine, when youare HUNTING, and not sitting around #####ING:p

What on earth did the SKS do to you as a child...? :runaway:

Have you ever even shot a yugo SKS as a side note? If you're still having problems with the rifle, I'd put good money on the problem being you, the shooter. ;) Legions of us use it to good effect. You can get there too, just takes practice, thankfully the ammos cheap. ;)

I like this guy.

Least favorite where do I start.....whole bunch of useless, repetitive calibers out there.

Least favorite would go to 22-250 way to loud for what you get.

a well placed shot from an SKS can kill adeer.;)

and so can a well-placed .22 LR, or a well-placed spear...

Nobody's saying that deer are impervious to the 7.62x39, or that the SKS is literally unusable as a hunting rifle. But most people agree that they're both MARGINAL for that purpose.

MARGINAL doesn't mean unusable. MARGINAL means there are lots and lots of better choices.

As marginal as the 30-30, yes.:p :dancingbanana:

Chuck Hawks is hardly the definitive answer on anything...:p

I stole ths from another thread:

http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=100107&page=2

This info is from the Remington website. For those who haven't visited it yet, they have a ballistics page where you can compare up to 3 calibers & select from a variety of different bullet weights.

Muzzle Velocity
7.62x39mm - 125gr. PSP - 2365 ft/sec
30-30 Win - 125gr. PSP CL - 2175 ft/sec
30-30 Win -150gr SP CL - 2390 ft/sec

Energy (ft-lbs)
7.62x39mm - 125gr. PSP - 1552 (muzzle), 1180 (at 100 yrds)
30-30 Win - 125gr. PSP CL - 1313 (muzzle), 919 (at 100 yards)
30-30 Win - 150gr. SP CL - 1902 (muzzle), 1296 (at 100 yards)

The Velocity & Energy comparisons actually go up to 500 yards on the Remington site, and they also have Long Range & Short Range Trajectory comparisons up to 500 yards as well, which show how high or low the bullet rises or drops at each distance.

My comment: Looks like the energy at 100 yards isn't much different. 116 ft/lbs

Here is what Prospers chrony says:

(stolen form the same thread)

Source: Me & my chrony.

Marlin 336RC 30-30. 150gr (factory ammo) @ ~2050 fps
SKS 7.62x39 150 gr @ ~2100fps__________________

Hell, i'd go out and set up the chrony but I dont' have a 30-30..:)

My chrony results should be appended to mention that my 30-30 was an 18.5" carbine. Normal published 30-30 velocities are taken from 24" barrels. And even then, they're often rather 'optimistic'

From Hodgdon data, bith with 24" barrels- About 200 FPS slower wiht a 150gr bullet.
