M40 Family - Who owns one?

The M40 was really just a Remington 40x in a wood stock. The 5R will have the barrel length, paint it black, find a wood stock and you'd have a pretty close build going. All depends on how much you want to spend and how close do you want it to look.
5R is just the style of rifling that is in the barrel. Same style of rifling found in the US Army M24 sniper rifle, supposed to be more accurate than the standard rifling found in the other barrels.
Other than that, the rest of the rifle is just a standard 700.
The barrels on the GEN 2 5R are fluted only from my understanding. The GEN 1 are can be found fluted or not.
That's what I thought. I'd buy the SPS myself (as I did) if you aren't going for down to the detail correct. As AG said, the current 5R is fluted but the correct length. Alternately, the SPS is 26" but un-fluted. Neither barrel is the correct profile for an M40. My opinion is I would save the money and buy the SPS. Cut the barrel and recrown if the long nose bothers you. That being said, I have no experience with the 5R so can't attest to the greater accuracy in that barrel. I'm pretty much talking out of my ass at this point, I'm no expert on this.
Yeah, funny. That's how it goes I guess. Not a good time to buy things from the US, my stock cost upwards of 1200 bucks so far just to get it ordered, haven't gotten a total on final price with shipping yet though, and I really don't know when its going to land. As for it being a good looking rifle, I suppose it is. The real question though is will it shoot? Might layer up tomorrow and go out to see what I can do.

It hit -27 that weekend so I decided the wolves probably froze solid and there was no reason for me to go
The good old SPS heavy barrel 308,,, guess I'm in luck since I have 2 of them.
My main rifle is going into my Wild-Cat Vartac Composite stock for hunting and general plinking,,, my other SPS is tied up as a F Class rig for a few years yet.

Then switch it over to 1 of the M40's.
It won't be the real deal or nothing, but the building idea will make it a fun project fore sure.
A fellow brought a M-40 unit to our F Class shoot at Calgary Homestead range a few years ago,,, it shot pretty fare over all in the group of 17 shooters that day.
Hats off to the fellow since he had to buckle down to keep his unit planted well shooting up against us with the 18 lb rifles.
This looks like a fun project fore sure

When I first saw your pics of the lefty scope mount I was looking on my phone, small pics. Didn't realize you had cut and rebuilt it. Just saw it now on my laptop, wow. I can only imagine what result I would have gotten trying to cut one apart and flip it/weld it. That looks really good.

I checked out some M-40 A3 stocks last night,,, I'm pretty lucky since I have a brand new Wild-Cat Composite Vartac ready to use.
They come with the wide fore-end and pistol grip drop,,, 2.2 lbs for mine since Stewart filled in the lug area """incase""" I decide to drop my Remmy 700 long action into it.
The reason I went with the Wild-Cat Composite stock is that the fore-end is filled full length with a centre section to prevent twisting when shooting off hand,,, bags or bypod.
They are pretty solid stocks to work with.
And made right here in Western Canada.
