Way to go AG, the photo looks alot like a place West of Cochrane Alberta... I can't wait to go to my clay bank area out West along the Eastern Slopes of AB...

We shoot the pinnacle's sticking out from the ridges,,, that way we don't have to set out targets... Ha

Shooting natural features is way to easy and fun,,, plus it puts us in our Elk & Moose territory...

Niece asked me to take her shooting. She then wanted to try Uncle's "sniper rifle". It was of course way too big for her but she still managed to hit a pop bottle twice at 100 yards with it!

The barrels on the GEN 2 5R are fluted only from my understanding. The GEN 1 are can be found fluted or not.

The Remington 5r gen1 and gen2 are not your typical 700. They are very different in many aspects. The 5R rifles have a stainless barrel, non fluted for the gen1 with SS finish, fluted and slightly heavier profile with threads for the gen2 and flat black finish, they have a stainless action that was blueprinted at the factory unlike all the other 700's and they have the nicer HS Precision fiberglass stock. The 5R is part of the model name by the way, it's not just that they have a 5R rifled barrel (which they do though).

That's why they are quite a bit more money and they are much nicer than the standard 700's

According to the person I talked to at Remington, the 5R are the same receiver and bolts as other Remington 700 rifles, nothing special done to them. It is simply the barrel and the HS Precision stock which make up the 5R branding according to them.

Stainless doesn't do anything for the accuracy of them. It is a choice on the looks of the firearm.

It's all how it is heat treated for the overall strength.

416R may last a little longer in the throat before wearing out, I think by something like 10% longer. But I've never read anything to do with flex.

AG, I'm jealous of your niece. And now I'm getting anxious for my new stock to get here! I really should have spent the last couple months getting someone to build me a barreled action but have been busy shooting rimfires with the kids. Maybe next year or this winter....

Really getting antsy waiting for the stock now. I hope the pattern is funky.

Just what I was told by Remington USA when I called them regarding removal of my stock barrel. I mentioned to them that I was thinking of sending my action out to get trued before having it rebarreled and they said it had previously been done at the factory. Now that could be someone just saying things for the sake of it. But that's what I was told. That was 2 years ago.

I could see someone at Remington thinking they "square things up in general on every action" (which we all know is a bit hit & miss) but specifically more attention to detail truing up the Milspec 5R I find that unlikely.

Would be great if that were the case but would have to get more follow up information on that from them. Anything's possible however. I'm not closed off to the idea. Some of their custom shop stuff is very good and that's just a walk across the factory away.

If it was done at the factory then why would all the renowned precision gunsmiths make a living out of correcting all the lack concentricity and other dimensions on factory actions. And don’t take my word for it there are plenty to YT videos showing how out of true a factory Remington is. And I say that as a Remington fanboy.

Even the 40x don’t get any truing as we understand it from the above noted mention of the processes carried out by precision gunsmiths, they are simply selected for above average straightness prior to being roll stamped with the 40x nomenclature and Remington logo.

Again I am a big Remington fan, but I send Stiller Tac 338 to be barreled it needs and gets no extra treatment action wise, I send a new to me Remington it needs and gets the works. The only exception is when I use ( as I often do to correct bolt to raceway clearance) a new PTG bolt, then no cutting of the bolt lugs is required, but the receiver face, receiver bolt lug abutments still get cut and squared.

By the way, build #2 on the way,

-Clip slotted Remington short action with old style bolt handle
- Krieger M24 contour barrel ( to be turned to 1.200” x 4.0 at the chamber portion to match the M40A1 profile) and old style square cut crown (BTW that’s the old barrel in the photo)
- PTG .697” bolt body with original handle tig welded
- repro lugged M40A1 mount with Simrad cap
- M70 steel trigger guard and floor plate modified to USMC specs inc escutcheon and screw, black oxide coated
- McM spec stock with brown Pachmayr pad and Wichita swivels

And looking at a couple of MST-100’s after I save up some pennies.....

A bit of a odd ball using a Remmy Long Action,,, but hey,,, any thing goes in the copy cat build. Ha
