My rifle shoots 1/2" groups @100 yards all day! Really? Prove it.

Another KICK at the chilly range today. I am not going to say a lot. Let the pictures do the talking.

Grp 1: .266
Grp 2: .471
Grp 3: .295
Grp 4: .476
Grp 5: .375

Smallest Grp: .266
Agg: .3766

Target 2 40gr Bergers, 47clks Blended Powder
Grp 1: .372
Grp 2: .402
Grp 3: .337
Grp 4: .392
Grp 5: .451

Smallest Grp: .337
Agg: .3908

Rifle: Rem 700 .223 Remington
Used Hart Barrel (used to be chambered in 22-250 Ackley Imp)
Leupold VX3 8.5-25 X 40, Target Dot
Jewell HVR trigger
TPS Rings
Farrel 20 MOA base
Action work, bedding and fitting barrel done by Guntech

I have to get some more bedding compound and I will bed it into my 2.5" Shehane stock and see how much difference that makes. All I know is shooting a Sporter stock keeps one on there toes. Slightest lack of concentration and a shot lost.

All I can say is ABOUT PHU+++++ TIME. Not as pretty as I would like but never the less accomplished 2X's in one day with 2 different bullets and loads.

AWESOME CALVIN..............way to go, you deserved every last bit of that........
now hang that target on the wall.....its something to be proud of...

The plan is to NOT fail. I think this will be attempt 7 or 8.

Always good to have a plan, glad it all worked in your favor for a change..........

Abbycat has been watching your trials with anticipation, she is pretty new to the sport and keeps asking me why its so hard and why people haven't been posting, she doesn't quite get yet that the Savage was built with a specific purpose in mind....not built to be just another rifle on the wall of a sporting goods store........maybe after I replace her savage with a axis she will understand it more....and I can shoot the savage again.

Awesome shooting!.What's your blend?

Yodave, this rifle was never meant to be anything special. Just something to take out on occasion into the gopher patch or after coyotes. I new that used barrel could shoot rather well even though the round count is unknown and in a 22-250 Improved to boot. Talk about barrel burner. I bought it because it was scoped by Henry Remple and he told my buddy it looked like it had not seen a lot of rounds down it. I just wanted something that was easy to load and shoot instead of the time and effort that goes into shooting BR and the 6PPC's. Granted I love shooting BR but sometimes it is just nice to not be seeking PERFECTION on each and every group.

Abbycat, you are fortunate you have a great rifle in your home and a man who put together a good shooter. To accomplish what you did on the first attempt really PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEd me off............................ ;-) But that is the way the sport goes. You can think you have some of the best equipment out there and on any given day be beat. Some of those groups that yourself and Yodave shot would give some of us a run in the BR game. I am by no means a great shooter but I like to think I can hold my own.

I have to more Varmint bullets that I want to beat this challenge with. If I was not going to visit my Mom and Dad tommorrow I would be loaded up for a trip to the range tommorrow. I have not seen them since Christmas so it is LONG overdue. Dad is 84 and Mom 74.

Good luck to the rest of you.

Nice shooting cycbb486! Took you long enough lol. Now I feel left out. I hope to make it out tomorrow but the weather doesn't look good. I added you to the list in the original post.

First time out to try this challenge. I must say that I had some grave doubts - I knew I had at least two - possibly three - rifles that could, in the hands of an expert shooter, do the job but I wasn't too sure I had the requisite level of expertise to pull off the job. Anyway, I decided to give myself the best chance possible and so I eschewed my F/TR in .308 and PGW Coyote in same calibre and chose, instead, to use my F/Open rifle: my Barnard in 6mmBR.

I had some thiry-odd rounds made up using the Berger 105VLD's (over 30.2 Varget) which is a bullet I've decided ins't so consistent for me as the Berger 108 BT's at longer range so I decided to burn them off in this short-range challenge. I shot from the prone as I always do and the rifle rested on a Henry Rempel bipod and I used a Protektor rear bunny-eared bag.

The range was Mission Rod and Gun, weather was sunny and about 7deg C

I never shoot at 100m so I fired 3 rounds at an adjacent target to confirm zero and then fired all 25 in an unbroken string at the target pictured below.

This is a picture of the biggest group - shot 3rd of the five shot. Thought I had screwed up but made it after all !

Rifle was Barnard with Kreiger 1:8. Robertson GBR stock. S+B 12-50 with 1/8th MOA clicks and P4 Fine reticle

Target 1 = 0.294"
Target 2 = 0.251"
Target 3 = 0.441" = largest
Target 4 = 0.250"
Target 5 = 0.194" = smallest

Mean Average = 0.286"

Cheers,

Bob.

Congrats on the great shooting guys!

I tried for the second time on Saturday and failed again, not by much but still a fail.

This past time I had 2 different loads, one I use all the time and the other I just threw together with the same powder charge as my 80 Amax but I topped them with 69 SMKs instead. AND the SMKs shot better
Everything I thought I knew is now out the window, time to rework the load I guess and or get more SMKs

Nice shooting Tomochan. I added you to the list in the original post. You also shot the new smallest average. Congrats

Thanks ! I have to say that after shooting the third group I had to really re-focus as I thought I'd screwed it and then I see groups four and five were the best I shot. Now if only I could bottle that mental concentration LOL!

An excellent thread Underthegun - it is a tough challenge but very worthwhile to try.

whay to go.........3 day weekend out here in BC so hopefully we see come more results come in....pass or fail....

Ok, this is my second post in this thread. My first showed attempt #3 (iirc) which was a fail, but today with attempt #6 I succeeded :).
My previous tries were with 90gr VLDs, but I'm out of stock so I used 80gr VLDs with an unproven load of 25gr Varget, and I got lucky. I ran three rounds to warm up and went for broke. No record breaking groups, but within spec.
Group sizes,
1, .340
2, .377
3, .273
4, .278
5, .474
average .348, smallest .273

Todays best, .273

And my rifle of choice, Rem 700, .223
Trued action, RB trigger, 28" Shillen 1:7, throated for 90gr VLDs, AICS 2.0, Burris Z's holding a Sightron 10-50x60 on a 20moa EGW rail.
This is an older picture, and I haven't tried with the .308 yet.

Nice shooting 9x19p. Yet another name added to the list. I'm glad to see everyone out trying and trying again. The weather kept me from going out this weekend. Well next weekend I guess.
