Norinco JW-15A Compact Hiker New Arrival

My 15a was never this rough for sure and no squib included! OMG.... As fatcatsdad said the Scorpio is a far better finished rifle , no comparison. The safety is even useable. No sights to be misaligned mind you. The bluing is similar to my Ruger American.
I haven’t handled the Norinco jw15, but I’ve also seen those Scorpios to be decent quality. If these jw15s can be made to work I love the design, but it would need to be examined on site before purchase it seems.

Just an update so far.
The sights on my rifle look reasonable straight,
The bolt itself had some very sharp edges a ding in the lengthwise slot and a hanging burr still attached.
I took a stone to it and removed. all the sharp edges with a polishing wheel on my dremel
There is still some rubbing between the bolt and the receiver when I cycle it but that will clear up with use.
When I tried to look down the barrel I couldn't see daylight thru it and though wow lots of cosmoline or whatever they use.
I could not get a cleaning rod to go thru from the receiver end of the action.
I pushed it thru from muzzle and about 1 inch from the receiver end of the barrel there was an obstruction.
I gave it a slight nudge and a bullet dropped out of the receiver end ( see included picture ).
Looks like a squib round had been fired and unnoticed previously.
The barrel was not horribly dirty otherwise and cleaned up fine.
I did not get to shoot it today, hopefully tomorrow.View attachment 924947
Maybe someone returned it like that ? I've bought new guns from stores, to get them home to find they been used or broken.

One was a Marlin 70 HC from CT once. I got it home after the long LGR process. To find both mags were not for marlins, and someone pinched the recoil spring.

But it is kind of on the store to inspect before selling. Not just grab a box and send it out.

You’d be surprised how far a bit of time with a jewelers file and lapping compound can get these. I bought the longer barreled version just to see how much I could polish a turd and It turned into hand down of the best bang for the buck rifles I own.
Classic Legacy Norinco products are and were best seen as functional "Projects", typically they will function and get the job done out of the box but for people equipped with some tools, knowledge and hand skills..... and willing to put in a little extra effort, they can be very satisfying projects.

De-horning sharp edges is almost a given, then after that smooting out and polishing mating surfaces is never a bad idea.

100% this.
I finally had the rifle out for it's first test drive this past weekend and after the deburr and polish the bolt is remarkably smooth and it fed every round from the 9 not 10 round magazine for a couple hours of plinking fun.
Even had a first time shooter try it and she enjoyed using it as did I.
It might come from the factory rough but it in the end it worked as it was supposed to.

Thanks, everyone, for sharing your experiences and feedback!

Looking forward to more ideas from you all!
I would buy this right now if it was in 22mag!!! Especially with the 13” barrel!

Sent mine for warranty at Mar 26, Didn't pay a dime for RMA shipping back to Tenda, and fully refunded back to me today. Honestly I was expecting some kind of replacement, so pleasant surprise for me. I get to appreciate Tenda more and more. Thanks Tenda, xiexie!

i had one of these quite few years ago and it worked 100%....finish was slightly higher than most norinco products I had seen...could these have been left over parts more recently assembled?

Did the same thing, rounded the edges, polished the sear and lapped the action with compound.

Fun project for little money...

Mine, a 13" hiker purchased in 2015 or 2016, is my steadfast companion and one of my favorite, if not my absolute favorite, guns. It's extremely accurate - I can basically always hit a 6x6 steel plate at 130 meters with a cheap Simmons 4x and crap ammo. I've frozen the gun in -40 and fallen down foothills and gravel roads with it. I've literally pulled dried vegetation out from between the stock and barrel that I missed and had to be in there for many months.

No real issues from it or the scope. Lost the front sight protector in the bush. The scope rings have come loose a couple of times. Loctite won't hold for some reason, but that's probably a ring issue and the fact the gun gets rode very hard. The finish is really resilient for a simple but really deep bluing. Safety was difficult to engage/disengage for a while when new. Fixed itself.

I will note that if you hold the gun from under the magazine it can cause feeding issues. I don't do that anymore so problem solved. This gun is far more accurate AND reliable than my Savage BTVSS (BVTSS?) laminate stainless steel .22. The one thing I wish this gun would improve on from the factory is the muzzle's crown. It's not very recessed and when falling with the gun climbing up or down something rocky (obv. unloaded) I get a little nervous the muzzle will be damaged. Hasn't happened yet though.

If could only own 1 .22, this would be it hands down. I should buy another.

A wood stock option would be appreciated. Either with the rifle or sold individually. I see the longer barrel has wood as an option.

I did this and ended up with a really accurate and reliable shooter.
