Norinco NS522 build: NEW MAG RELEASE

Thanks to all of you for your kind words and input with this build. I have been so very pleased with all of your projects too.

One member in particular truly warmed my heart the other day and I wanted to thank him for the gesture. It was truly an "awwe shucks" moment. Member " mildcustom2" nominated me for (sniff) CGN member of the year based off of this thread. All of you have helped create this fun build, so thank you to Sean, but also for everyones support and feedback.

This has been a great thread. Your kindness motivated me to go through my gun room and I donated two Savage 99 stock sets this week to other members. I also sold some 22 lr to a guy recently who invited me to his club to shoot. Another amazing guy, and I will be taking him up on his offer to shoot the 300 yard range.

We have a great community here.

The pay it forward thing is rather addictive.

anyone else finding that their bolt slides smoothly but to lower the bolt handle takes a fair but of effort. like more than just thumb and fore finger pressure? any idea for lightening this.?
cheers fellas. going to go shoot mine tomorrow for the first time.

just checked the pics of the sear and other trigger parts that farther posted. mine came from the factory with amazingly polished sear and other parts. the groove for the spring was still rough. but everything else was crisp. anyone else found that?

Follow my steps for the bolt disassembly. I didnt include full pics of every step, but after a few hundred rounds you will be able to spot the areas that need attention/ polishing.

Do you mean on an empty chamber or chambering a round? The match chamber makes some pretty hard to close the bolt on.

:agree:

Such an awesome thread. I just received my 522 today and will be starting on the prep work tomorrow. Mostly just cleaning. Planned mods are going to be a free float check, pillar bedding and new recoil pad, for now.

First impression is that it's really not too bad looking. From what others were saying I was expecting the stock to look like it was cut with a chainsaw and finished with a knife. But aside from the fit of the mag it looks alright. Can't wait to shoot it!

so went and shot mine on saturday. was using federal high velocity ammo. at 50m i was putting 10 shots into just under 3/4 inch. so happy with that. was off a backpack with my hand as a rear rest. need some sandbags.

decided to pillar and bed the action, free float the barrel. hopefully will get out next weekend to test. thought id post some pics of the bedding job. didnt get any before or during the process. 8min epoxy was stress full enough. without taking pics.

bottom, still needs more epoxy. but you can see where the pillars are. (just)

all trimmed up. used a chisel and file with it on my lap. dont have a vice here. a mill would have been nice.

thanks again Father. love the gun. might have to get a few more for the brothers.
father. the bolt seems to be smoothing up. did put 200 rounds through it the other day. :)

That was my experience, the bolt smoothed up really quickly, but mine still needs a lot of force for the final lockup. Father's didn't seem to, but another poster had the same problem. I haven't decided to worry about it yet, but you really lose your sight picture when you have to use your palm to slap it down!

Exactly. I definatly can't maintain my sight picture. I took a little off the bolt cocking ramp last night to make the angle less aggressive. Will see if that helps at all.
My savage on the other hand I can cycle with one finger

Take a look at your bolt. There might be some fines in there that's creating rough travel. That's what's happening to me.

The 2 piece firing pin has a little extention that travels along the incline and locks into place. Well the metal there is soft and on mine after a few cycles has worn down quite a bit. I'm sure this isn't that much of a problem but after few thousand rounds that part might need to be replaced. I kinda wished they used a harder material there.

I also fully disassembled my gun and smoothed everything out. Put radia on every edge that's not part of the sear engagement. There were burs everywhere. Now she's smooth and cycles almost effortlessly. It's a great design but quite rough around the edges. Next step is to apply HBN to all contact surfaces.

Sorry for my lack of updates guys. I have been super swamped with work.

I spent some time last night and I have determined that the main cause of your difficult bolt is most likely the relationship of the bolt handle with the receiver. Mine has a decent wear mark and I can tell that if it was reduced, then so would the effort needed to close the bolt. I will post up some pics, but I would warn anyone that may read this and get the urge to Dremel away.
This mod most likely will affect headspace and removal of material (excessive) may cause light strikes or worse. I will test it further on mine to determine if it is safe.
