Restoration Sticky.

I've been posting on this one over at milsurps for a while now. Its a '44 Longbranch FTR'd at Fazakerly in '51. It has an absolutely pristine bore in a super crisp but smooth Faz barrrel, nicest one that has passed through my hands to date (not that thats a lot of them but this one is the best by far). It was a Christmas present from my wife this year. I'm not only restoring it, but am converting it to a 4T clone. I have the No32 scope and repro bracket, cheekrest and micrometer rear sight sans battle aperture thanks to a bunch of awesome CGNers!

 Quick update: rifle is now what I would consider restored. I'm going out to test the bedding and sight it in with the aperture tomorrow.

It and my as issued '42 Longbranch in the last one there. Just awaiting a nice Canadian buttplate then its basic form is finished. Range testing tomorrow then I will decide if it deserves that scope in the background. If it does I'm off to learn how to solder properly then onto building a jig then time to get the files out and fire up the drill press. Things are coming together.

A few very nicely done, guys! Keep it up! :)

Here's my latest contribution. This one's a No4Mk2, which gave me trouble. The forend was a b*tch to bed. The first front handguard I tried to fit was twisted and didn't fit right. The trigger was resisting movement, binding a bit. Etc. Finally, it's finished... but it did get me to swear at time.

Enfield P14

Hi folks, I acquired this P14 a few months ago. Despite a rough exterior, the bore is fantastic, so I dealt with its issues. Fun detail, the forend is number-matched with the barreled action. The bolt, unfortunately, isn't.

A chunk was missing from the forend, and the exposed portion of the barrel at the front was pretty severely rusted. So I repaired the missing wood chunk and had to cold blue the barrel tip. Definitely not a museum piece, but a P14 ready to have fun at the range.

Cold blue doesn't give a stellar result but it's a significant improvement over the rust-covered, pitted starting point.

Had to re-sporterize this one. The former job just wasn't nice at all.

Needs a re-blue on everything but the bolt now and it'll be gorgeous again. Bolt has nice case colors!

Ya it's a shame that it was cut up so badly. The barrel was shortened a lot. If it had a full length barrel I could have just ordered a new blank or a repro stock and done a proper restoration. But now it looks like someone cared about the job they did a bit anyway. And I now have a rear sling swivel for my MkI resto project, and a good hand guard in case I do find a good restorable sporter down the road. And I'm quite happy with how it looks now, was already very happy with how it shot. Just looked like it had been attacked with a chainsaw.

Nice Lou!

Heres the one I've been working on for a bit over a year. I'm still missing a rear sling swivel and I need a new sear spring to replace one that I broke during rebuilding...

1918 NRF No1 MkIII* rebuilt postwar in 1953 at BSA using a BSA commercial barrel. This thing will flat SHOOT!

Quite proud of this one as I did a lot more than restore an old sporter with a new replacement woodset. The woodset I used had really seen better days, very battle hardened, having been in Indian service a long time. I removed the Ishy screw and plugged the hole. Also replaced the draws, and repaired a crak on the right side of the fore end. The butt needed a new heel and toe, and the socket stub was really worn out. The front handguard I recieved from a CGNer was brand new but quite oversized. None of it color matched! I also re "suncorited" it with multiple coats of John Deere muffler paint over the original finish so it can go back to the original suncorite if the Deere paint was a mistake. Took a lot of work but it sure turned out well in the end.

Thanks for the help and parts everyone!

I'm obsessed with red stocks, just something gorgeous about them. Hope Lou doesn't mind if I spill the beans on this one a bit. I strip the old finish and most of the stains etc with circa 1850 stripper, then scrub it with braekleen and a toothbrush, then scrub it with dish soap and a combo of steel wool and a toothbrush in the hard to reach spots. Let it dry overnight. The I use whatever combo of pink and brown water based stains are needed to get the color right, even black if need be. You can always go darker easier than lighter. The water based stain allows the wood to take linseed oil finish without losing your color. Lou taught me that. Then finish with a few good soakings in RLO.

In case there is some one here who hasn't seen it yet.
