This thread has been a learning excursion for all of us
(thanks to OP Calalta who did his homework).
It's also a learning experience so that each of us may
jump in and help another noobie.
Thanks 3strokes you have contributed a lot to this.
I originally posted this thread because I had found lots of good info on this site but it wasn't consistent, some thought the CFC approved the licence, others thought CFO approved it. Some had interviews, others didn't, some got their licences in 28 days while some waited 4 or 5 months.
Then I saw a post saying you could call in and that got things moving, another said you could get your file number and have references call in, someone else got their PAL number over the phone (while another said they have a strict policy against that).
It is still not a transparent process but it is a bit easier to figure out now.
My own story is that I learned around Feb. 14/10 my POL would expire at the end of 2010 and I would need to submit a new application complete with spousal consent to keep my POL so I thought I might as well get a PAL. Then I learned I could challenge the exams rather than sit through the courses so on Feb. 19 challenged both courses, got results that day and sent in my application on Feb. 20.
I wasted two weeks by missing question 17b (other conjugal relationship) but still had a clerk at CFC tell me my application was going too fast and it should take about 90 days!
She refused to transfer me to the Alberta CFO so I called back and got someone else to transfer me and was approved by CFO over the phone.
March 19 got my RPAL number over the phone and bought an hmr .17 the next day without a card.
