To the first question, No. You cannot push to get it online. The moment they open your letter and enter your name into the computer, it shows up online and you can call to confirm paperwork, correct anything, or see if they require any additional information.
You second question relates to the first. As far as I've seen, every application goes online and is corrected/ammended from there. Once you see it online, you can call and correct your info. In Ontario, that's around 11-14 days after they receive it. The clock starts ticking from the day they receive it though... so don't worry yet. Once you see it online, call in. "Hi there, Mr. Vancouver here. Calling to make sure you receive all the required documents. I also need to correct my Postal code, I put a '1' instead of a '2' for the last digit, sorry about that."
Because he's renewing, not awaiting a new license. Same as your drivers license; You get a M1, it expires. Walk back in, you can write M1, pass it, and write/ride for M2 immediately because you've already done the wait period. Done it myself.
