Shorty M14 presale + .308 ammo deal

actually, if you violate the paper, and reach in there and pull something out then the rest comes out easy- i've also noticed that the chinese ones sometimes have the combo tool/oiler and the rod sections reversed- it's supposed to go combo tool, ratchet brush and oiler in the top compartment- then cleaning rod sections, , bore brush in nylon keeper , jag in in the baggie in the lower section. however, in some of the chinese stocks, they drilled the hole too shallow and you can't fit the contents of the upper hole in there- ie you have to either leave out the oiler or the ratchet brush[; in the baggie in the lower, you're supposed to place the 4 standard sections in the bag, then put the bore brush in its protector( that's the nylon tube that goes over the brush) and put the jag on top or below that so you actually make 5 columns- then you can put the whole thig into the LOWER compartment, and leave the tongue of the baggie in the top of the hole, then close the door- i have yet to see one of these doors that doesn't need an assist of some kind to open it- tip of the bayonet, bullet end, etc- in the field, we never bothered , and just carried a spare on the belt or in your pack somewhere- if you're hunting with this thing, there are 2 schools of thought- 1) evacuate everything so it makes no noise,or 2) wrap some patches around things that rattle-( the pin in the combo tool for instance) and shake it good so you can hear what's going to give you away

In my 1st Polytech I took everything out , even the tubes to save weight.
I got a rubber but pad ,took off the metal butt plate and threw the sling and all that stuff in a drawer somewhere. I put a quieter sling on it as I wanted to hunt with it.
The only usefull stuff is the combo tool and the racheting chamber brush and that I keep in my cleaning kit . IMHO

heresy- you MUST keep your cleaning kit intact at all times- seriously, for all you NEW M14S/M305 OWNERS: get yourself a DEWEY OR OTHER ONE PIECE ROD and leave the rod that comes with the rifle in it or extract it and put it someplace where you WON'T be tempted to use it- THAT "KIT" HAS BEEN RESPONSIBLE FOR RUINING MORE BORES THAN YOU CAN SHAKE A STICK AT= and get a empty 12 guage hull for a bore guide- you're going to have drill out the primer hole to fit the rod, but it works perfectly

Took mine out to Poco this afternoon. Put about 50-60 rounds through it with the iron sights. Functioned perfectly. Trigger's surprisingly good, and the safety's not as stiff as it was. Action seems to have smoothed out a bit, too. Overall, couldn't be happier with this impulse buy!

Lots of people seemed interested in checking it out (and I let a few of 'em try it :) )

On an unrelated note, I got to try a local constable's duty sidearm at the range... wow, RCMP guns SUCK! DAO, heavy trigger... no thanks

Mine had this

Order id: #3944463
Order date: Oct 3, 2011 03:36:05 PM
Tracking number: RIFLE: D000000074001, AMMO SHIPPING SHORTLY

The letters in bold are the number , go to the Canpar website and find the tracking section and then add your postal code as well.

I had to remove the entire buttplate and then the plastic holder to get the cleaning kit out no amount of pulling would have removed it as it was bulged outside the plastic moulding.

ok, for the REST OF YOU- OPEN THE DOOR, MOVE THE TONGUE OUT OF THE WAY , REACH IN THERE WITH A PAIR OF NEEDLENOSE PLIERS, , and AND PULL OUT ONE SECTION OF CLEANING ROD- then the sleeve will collapse and you can pull the rest out
even on the REAL m14 this is EXTREMELY TIGHT - so tight that it doesn't rattle - the plastic has probably swelled in the shipment over here- and if you must take the buttplate off, JUST LOOSEN it, DO NOT TAKE IT COMPLETELY TO PIECES UNLESS YOU WANT TO REPLACE IT- i hate to see you guys doing extra work for nothing, and i'm pretty sure that upper screw will break in the housing if you over-torque it-
put your cleaning rod sections in collar up if the rifle is pointed down so you can reach in there the next time and not f/u the threads- one other trick i learned was to re-tap the sections to 8-32 so i could use usgi cleaning rod sections , but these aren't available anymore-

Here's a few pics and observations on the rifle I received yesterday.

-The front sight is taller than the 22" version. No welds evident.

-Rear sight moves freely and easily in elevation and windage.

-Overall fit and finish is better than my 2007. For example, the gas lock is not nearly as rough or unfinished.

-There's a small amount of play in the op rod guide.

-The small amount of medium oil was easy to clean off.

-I used pliers to grab the tab on the cleaning rod sleeve and they came out with a medium amount of effort.

-My AIA mag fits nicely and should work just fine.:)

i wonder if one of the suppliers would be good enough to design a DIFFERENT STYLE gas plug ( ie shorter) so that the bayonet lug would actually be USEFUL- maybe something on the lines of the GARAND that sits almost flat with the housing?

OK I will !! lol , once it gets here of course.....did I metion its now been
63 hrs and 7 min since it left Vancover d:h:

Thanks for the pics Stevo I have been wondering about the front sight height issue .

Buy an AIA bolt gun from Marstar and you get two. Realistically, that's the only way to get any. Or I'll sell you mine for $799.:)

Very easy to remove the buttplate assembly like on my other M1's, you can see how the case was very bulged and required me to push it staright thru to remove.

Putting back togther was pretty easy but never thought of removing one piece of the cleaning rod at a time guess I learned something today, thanks.
