Soo my Type 97 just blew up on me

Glad your ok that's unreal! How would the warranty center know anyways if they were reloads or not being fired.....of course when you send it in tell them it was factory ammo....I hope it wasn't a site sponsor and hope they dont see this thread with you saying you were using reloaded ammo......most importantly you are ok.....secondly I hope you get a new T97 outta the deal

A friend a few years back got a little heavy on a charge in his SW 629 44 Mag, he blew out the cylinder wall and bent the frame. He was very lucky...If you admit to shooting reloads. Its void. He sent the gun to a SW warranty center saying it was factory Ammo. They fixed the gun and returned it with a two page letter on the evils of shooting reloads. Do you want a new gun or don't you?

Some people's integrity is worth more than the price of a new gun. Not yours of course, but some people's.

Hey Colin,
Glad that you are not toooo damaged.

Another member here contacted me about a similar blow up.
(I posted a WTB ad http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1389878-Cheap-(damaged-)-T-97?highlight=t-97 for a damaged T97)
He was using factory loads when his let go.
So far, he has not posted here, so I wont name him.

His didnt trash the rear plastic as bad, but it did break a bit.
It blew the bolt lugs apart, and bent the shield part of the bolt carrier.
Yours looks like it has a bit of a bend too.

I'm beginning to wonder if I should rethink my barrel swap idea...

I'd say depends what the pressure of the other caliber you're thinking of is..

Other then the plastic cover and bolt head, the gun is intact, I can't get the bolt carrier to move, no bore obstruction and I can see a bit of the case in there, so it would appear to be a ammo failure of some sort. I just checked my press, the throw is correct, now in the process of pulling the bullets on 200 rounds and of course after 15 of them the collet in my puller gives up the ghost, sigh....

Bullpups give me a bit of anxiety.

Handloads aren't really any more dangerous than factory unless you're running them hot, anyone can make a mistake, at the bench, or the factory floor. It can be an unforgiving hobby, safer than a bike though.

Glad you didn't suffer more than a bit of superficial tissue damage and I assume a slight elevation in your heart rate...and of course the loss of the rifle.

Good luck on selling anything on EE from now on.

...Then I loaded up some of my reloads with 24.8grs of IMR 4320. I have used this load in it before with no issues and in other guns. I did set the gas system to 0 so it would not fling the reloadable brass to far. I am pretty careful about brass and try not to use the same brass to much, likely this one is on it's 2-3rd reload.

What bullet are you using? What is the OAL? Are you crimping?
What was the temperature out when you were shooting? When you worked up the load?
Did you work up the load with the gas turned off?
