See if this helps. The basics are:
-make sure you have the correct tools. To install the handguard you need a vice, torque wrench, and something to hold the receiver in the vice. I use a reaction rod from TNA.
-You insert the barrel in the upper receiver
-Put aeroshell grease on the upper receiver threads, twist on the barrel nut, season the threads by torqueing and backing off the barrel nut a few times. Then torque the barrel nut to manufacturer spec.
-Install the gas tube and gas block
-Install the handguard over the barrel nut and torque to spec
-Install a thread protector or muzzle device off your choice.
Sorry I'm at work but I think those are all the steps. Easy stuff.
Thanks so much for this info. Regarding the Aeroshell grease... are there other options? All I can find is large $70 tubes on Amazon?
My barrel nut seems to not have much room for tightening. When spun into place, it freely spins what appears to be all the way to the bottom of the upper receiver threads. I don't think there is much (if any) room for tightening on the threads, it might be bottomed out before getting that far?
Are you experiencing that with barrel placed in the receiver, already?
I just placed the barrel onto the receiver, then handbombed the barrel nut in place and it seemed to almost bottom out. Zero threads showing and maybe 1-2mm gap between the barrel nut and the receiver itself. I was just wondering if when I torque to 35ft/lbs will there be any thread left to do so?
Mil grease, lapping tool, shims and the correct Barrel nut with torque wrench is the equipment required when installing black rifle hand guards.
