Good grief that 69’r will smack varmints hard. 204 ruger with a 40 grainer already does. Never mind this almost double the weight at that speed.

Good, make that very good eye. ;) I went looking for this bear, and hiked to where I’d seen him from a rise a a km or so away. I got to the spot, single shot mouse rifle in hand as it was the only rifle I had, and had heard the odd twig cracking here and there in the bush alongside the more open path I’d walked in on. Was a windy day and wasn’t sure what I was hearing.

After walking a few circles of the little clear area I’d seen him in, or at least thought I was in the right clearing, I was starting on plan B and turning around to walk straight into the bear following my trail in the thicker part a handful of yards off and intently focused on me and coming steadily to me. Debated it but took a snap headshot, which didn’t knock him over the bullet ended up taking a path I hadn’t expected through bone. It would have been fatal as it tore the jugular but wasn’t quick, though it was messy.

It did distract him however, and he started spinning in front of me close enough blood droplets got on my boots. A second shot to the heart / lungs while he spun dropped him into a death moan and he was done. Most unnerving bear hunting encounter I ever had, not due to chambering just how it came together and how he acted, all the Grizzlies I guided were way less exciting in the end game.
 
I would guess that a 70-80 grain 22 pill at 3500-3700 FPS should do some sorta damage to a big critter. That’s a lot organ splatter if it reaches the organs
