The M1 Garand Build Thread

Got the last of my parts today and now shes all together, might try and match the colors of the wood now. Guess it's time to restore my sporterized 1903 now.

Great job on your build. Mine is nearing completion and have all the parts and just have to do the stock. Big problem is Pure Tung Oil or Raw Linseed Oil......What to do, What to do? It is Birch.

Update March 5th

ALL parts required for the firearm to function

Complete Boyd's stock, awaiting oiling/staining

Final metal parts for Stock to be arriving within next 1-2 weeks.

Only missing parts, are front and back sights.

I'm almost there too. Numrich order in the mail, all I'm missing is a rear sight cover, op rod catch assy and follower arm. Gas plug is supposed to be in the mail too, but seems to be taking a long time...

I have a BMB bolt that has some faint electro-pencil marks on the top. Would it be ok to have them "scrubbed" out? There is a machine shop down the road that could do it professionally instead of me and a dremel. Functional integrity? Needs to be refinished as it is. Any suggestions?

For those that are looking, a friend is talking about taking 3 NOS (and yes, I mean new, never on a gun) original Marlin 30-06 barrels to the Calgary show. I am not sure, but he might take a few others as well. But the Marlin Barrels are there. Any questions, just ask.

Would anybody be willing to post more pics of what they have done so far. I will post mine sometime soon. I think it would be really neat to see what others have done to their garands up to this point.....completed or not completed. Thanks,

-Shawn

Are these the original armoury over writes? If so, they are a part of the history of these things and I'd say keep!

Has anyone tried Remington 150 gr Springfield in there Garand and did it perform well. I tried a box through mine today and it shot about a foot low at 100 yards, very disappointing.

I received a letter from Sarco stating that they have run out of most of the M1 Grand parts. The parts I did receive were mostly International
Harvester.

Got my barrel shoulder "trimmed" back last night using lapping compound. About an hours worth of twisting back and fourth but got down to 14 degrees off TDC from 27 when hand tightened.

Here you go Shawn! I too am a fan of pictures ; )
Mostly all PB except the op-rod which is SA, Criterion barrel and a boyds stock that I re-contoured to a more USGI profile, and finished with tung oil and wax.
Just gathering the last few pieces for my 308, it will be all mixed parts.

How many here have completed and FIRED their project so far?

The one pictured above was my first one out of 6 I finished, it is still unfired, but 3 308's and one 30-06 are complete, fired and home with friends and family.

And of course, still more to go : )

This isn't a recommended method as it will change the dimensions on the face of the receiver as well as the barrel shoulder. The barrel steel is softer than the receiver so it is likely that most of the reduction has occurred on the barrel shoulder. This will work with the current receiver/barrel combination, but there is a possibility that another barrel would over-index with this particular receiver. The idea is to reduce the barrel shoulder, not the receiver face, to get the correct index established. During the post-WW2 rebuild process Springfield Armory salvaged receivers which would allow a barrel to over-index by chrome plating the receiver face.

Thanks for that. I know it's not the best way but it will work for me. I have also read of barrels which over indexed having the shoulder roll swagged. Apparently it can be done with a pipe cutter, removing the cutter and replacing it with a custom roller.

Got my shipment from Numrich... and it was much better than expected quality-wise. My odds and ends and trigger mech are all in like-new condition. I guess enough of you complained, or maybe I just lucked out!

Now to my new issue... eventually I am going to have to finish this piece. My receiver is faded but all my other parts are like-new, right out of the wrapping. Should I splurge on a park-kit? Or Gun-kote it?

Don't be a schmoe. If your receiver is faded, leave it alone. But if there is no finish at all, send it out to be parkerized. It is not expensive. At Arma Coat, Barrett does parkerizing ever second day.

Do not gunkote your Garand because whenever folks see your Garand, they will laugh at you behind your back.
