You buying the new SKS-15?

North Sylva posted this on their thread, but not everyone might be looking there:

After watching this, my interest level has dropped to less than zero.

Takedown isn't just about cleaning. It's also about clearing certain types of jams. Sure, not common malfunctions, but ones that can happen in any platform (AR, AK, VZ 58, you name it).

It's also about dislodging debris that can foul the action in field circumstances.

The takedown for this rifle is so complex, I wouldn't trust it for... Well actually pretty much anything. Not even range use.

There is ample room to clear any jam or debris. Using non corrosive, you would only have to full strip every case or half case of ammo. I would buy two but I already have two pimped out SKS rifles with mag adapters that get shot 200+ days per year, and I clean only after 1000 rounds.

Will then. After that video, I'm out. That Sage looks really nice though. Wonder if it has a cross pin? I don't care what it looks like, but the last thing I need is the action bouncing around in the stock.

Yeah, I can see why folks are always trying to give the SKS detachable mag options like the AK mags or the Robarms mags. This however just doesn't add to the useability of the rifle in any way.

This isn't just a pig in lipstick, its a pig with a dress.

People who refer to the SKS as pigs, is it because of the non-moa accuracy?
Or that at one point in time they were selling for under $100?
Or that there are many abused and badly maintained samples out there?

From the surface, its a milled receiver semi-auto rifle. Saw service in the real world. Reasonably reliable and quite robust. 3 MOA or so. Which is almost better spec than some new plastic black guns that cost 5, 12 times more, su16, x95 (sorry to some, no hate intended).

"Lipstick on a Pig" is an expression, they're not calling the SKS a pig.

The saying means that you can't change something by adding on some cosmetic stuff... it's a surplus SKS barreled action, no matter what you do to it. That's the sentiment and although I know people will buy this, it's a cheap rifle dressed up. Just like the Kodiak SKS that they machined to take 5rd AK mags for $500, it's a $200 rifle and that adds $300??? Numbers just don't add up.

Up to the buyer if they think it's worth it. If they believe so, let them buy one and review it on the forum.

I know it's a saying thx. But it does imply it is undesirable, you wouldn't use that expression on a KAC would you? Ergo my question. Try making a new manufactured SKS and see how much it will cost.

Pigs aren't undesirable. Think porkchops and, ummmm, bacon!
The SKS is a great firearm with a good history but you have to accept it for what it is and at its price point. It's a great introductory rifle and all purpose fun gun. Adding doo dads won't make it a better shooting rifle.
Just like putting a RMR on a Hi Point pistol or a spoiler on a LADA.
But like st1264 said, if the SKS-15 floats your boat, then buy one. Someone obviously thinks there's a niche for it or they won't have gone to the trouble to engineer it.

The top rail and 10rd mags seem like actual technical improvements, I would liken it to as if someone modding a Lada to become more fuel efficient or an AR free floated, those are technical improvements.
Spoiler on Lada would be like doing a FDE paint job or just putting a plastic folding stock on the SKS.
Just my 2 cents I've no skin in the game.

Why make a newly manufactured SKS when you can get one for $190-200 retail price???

If you like that setup, buy it. If not, so be it. The price tag doesn't ring true for me. If the price point was lower, I would consider it. That takedown is ridiculous as well... have issues at the range, you are pretty well screwed unless you brought your toolbox with you.

I can't see this selling well, but that's just me. It's hard to 'modernize' an old firearm and make it financially feasible when the bare bones $200 rifle will work for most.

When someone buys one and throws it on the EE for half price, I may think about it  - for $850 + taxes, no way.
