30-30 a 200 yds cartridge?

Another thread about a cartridge, focused on headstamps !?

Bullet design and velocity are what matter, not the headstamp.

If the 30-30 can deliver a projectile accurately to 200 yards (why not?) then there is almost certainly a .30cal bullet that will do what bullets are supposed to do at that distance because the only thing that matters about distance (assuming accuracy) is how much your bullet has slowed down since leaving the muzzle. (where it puts your bullet on the velocity curve)

I have never owned one but I am under the impression that velocities in the 30-30 tend to be underwhelming compared to more modern cartridges so a softer, fragmenting bullet would be what I would be looking for should I be so inclined.

Edit: just noticed the intended loading (Fed Fusion 150's) which are box-rated to be around 1800fps at 200 out of whatever length test barrel (24" often??) It should do what it's supposed to at 200 for sure. I have personal experience with the fusion bullet and ammo from back before I loaded and found it to be quite accurate.

Under 200m, great cartridge. Used just fine for over 120yrs on every animal on the American continent. Taken down more deer and moose than any modern combined.

Past that distance, get something more modern.

Every tool has its purpose.

It's like a car vs a sports car. Both will get you there just fine. One costs more and travels bit faster. That's it

Most fusion bullets call for 1900fps minimum. The 30-30 fusion is PROBABLY different, but I would want to confirm that personally. I highly doubt the bullet wouldn't perform at 200yds, but better safe than sorry.

Wow, I wouldn't have imagined they needed that much speed. They are pretty soft in my experience.
Happy to take your word tho.

I actually forgot the fusion was designed for max weight retention, which would explain that.

I just picked up cil 830 in 30-30, same as Savage 340, I put an older Bushnell scopechief 2.5-8 scope on it and with 150 gr fusion can put 3 rounds in a Tim Hortons coffee lid at 200 yds, this should be an easy kill on a deer at 200 yds? Your thoughts please
You will be just fine with that set up. Enjoy.

right, I looked at the 30-30 page. Didnt see the terminal speed either.

1900 is higher than the rated speed for the mono coppers I shoot nowadays.
I'd be surprised if that was actually the right number.
Barnes calls for 1800fps, but if you do some googling you'll find a lot of people suggesting that is too slow, and 2000fps is a better minimum to aim for. I don't have a lot of first-hand experience with them though, I haven't killed anything with one and I don't like sub-2000fps impacts either way. I don't like playing right at the minimum, too much chance of something going wrong IMO.

I Have hunted with Barnes exclusively in .30cal. 6.5, and 223 for almost 20 years now.
My own rule is 2000fps+.

Lately, I have been getting excited about Hammer Bullets and Cutting Edge.
Harder to come by and a bit more $$ but I'm happy to pay it for lead free meat.

PS .........Buddy found a 18" arrow shaft by the blades dressing a 5x5 bull elk last fall . All healed up. Another found a 12ga slug in the shoulder of a 6x6 and couple years prior. The wounding game quote is old and attributed to the .303 British round because of idiots hunting with FMJ's.

Jesus, you can tell who buys the 3000 buck latest super duper cartridge guys are...
30-30 is fine cartridge to 200yds. Regardless of what the bankrupt rifle buyers tell you
