300 Fireball AR15 (Brass forming - post #150)

Loaded subsonic, it's still loud as hell - but isn't nearly as loud or "flashy" as a shorty in 5.56. This makes it a joy to shoot, even if the ammo takes time and effort to make.

When the intial upper was being tested at an indoor range the guy sitting beside asked about the rifle cause it was soooooo quiet compared to a normal shorty AR which tend to be fairly obnoxious. And that was shooting supersonics! :)

It is also nice to be able to use cheap pulled mil surplus 147-150gr bullets and small charges of powder. As Doc has shown, brass can be made from cheap, plentiful .223 Rem cases. So other than a bit of work to make the cases, this thing is actually quite cheap to shoot.

Another one will be built soon . Just waiting for my 16" barrel to get here from ATR.

It went in the mail late last week. It is all up to the postman now.

Think it was sitting on Peter's desk about to be shipped last I saw....

Aren't you supposed to be home sick and not playing on the internet ? ? ? ? ? ? :jerkit:

Thanks boys. Doc is using 221 Fireball brass right? I read about this round in my latest Hornady manual. It srtuck me as interesting and I think they used 223 brass for it. So at present there is no commercial supplier of brass?

The rifling rates, did you guys choose them for specific reasons? Suputin's 1 in 8 would be better for heavier subsonics being suppressed I'm guessing.

This video looks like the way to go!

Yes, I used the .221 for a start - but am slowly nibbling into a pile of 5.56/.223 brass as time goes by. The fact that the chamber is cut to allow use of the thicker-necked .223 neck-downs without turning (something I haven't tested yet, but which I'm told based on the reamer specs when Suputin went back and looked at them again) will speed up the process almost tenfold.

Suputin's 1:8 is the ideal barrel here; I wanted one, but we didn't know what the wait time would be (and it had been a while already). When offered the option of a 1:10 with the caveat that I'd need to stick to 200 grainers or below, I said "deal." And yeah, the ATRS guys get to play with suppressors because of their licensing... while I don't, because the government doesn't trust us 'plebs.' :(

If I were to build a bolt gun in this chambering, it would have a 1:8 twist almost definitely. And I will, someday... ;) That's one that I COULD hunt with.

Yeah I've watched some boltgun videos. Almost zero recoil and the longer barrel when suppressed is real quiet.

Zero recoil - sweet.

Suppressed - in this country I suppose the point is moot, sadly.

But it's fun to watch on YouTube! :) I admit I've probably watched every single .300 Whisper video out there right now...

I'm just glad I bought that Daniel Defence rail used, for like $200.....cause I'm going to have to mill some holes just to get at the gas block set-screws, and gas adjustment....no big deal. :)

Have you played with any subsonics yet???

I've been playing almost exclusively with subsonics... my supersonic loads have been as an intentional "start high" and "work down" approach. :)

I've got my rig tuned for 100% reliability with 180gn subsonics now, it's pretttttttty slick!

PM me for tips - I'm not putting this hard work up openly, frankly.
