EMT Only to Buy a Sporting Rifle?

Thanks for that info 'Toymaker. Funny, I had thought through the EMT thing and that's what came to mind to me its easy to set up a bank account, apparently easy to get set up with EMT and its always been easy to close a bank account. I know, its scary I think like a crook sometimes

I'm curious that some say their bank holds Canada Post money orders to clear:confused: I've never had that experience mind you I just deposit in a machine. Another option as well is an old fashioned certified cheque its as good as cash as well. I prefer a postal MO though; cheap, quite quick, one stop, and a bit of a paper trail. You can require a signature for receipt too, another level of security.

Closing a bank account after sending an emt wouldn't work... Once you send an emt the funds are taken from your account and put on hold waiting for the receiver to complete the transaction... You can cancel an emt you sent but only if the receiver hasn't cashed it yet... That's why it is the best for sellers... You can send the item as soon as it's in your account...

Exactly, once I deposit the funds in my account, they are mine to keep. If you don't want to use EMT. or your bank does not offer the service, too bad for you, in the meantime, the rest of us will continue to do business using EMT, whether you like it or not.

As said above... An account CANNOT be closed or cancelled with an outstanding EMT or Certified cheque still active... Those funds are on hold and the account MUST remain open until that item is resolved... EMT is the safest option out there for online business.

I sent the funds thru EMT to an email handle. the funds were taken out and account closed. never got the product. Privacy act protected the account owner. Moneygram is guaranteed to arrive and only be picked up by the seller. One trip to post office also. Same day service.

Again did this happen on CGN or some other site.

You sound angry stubby... you should work on that, its not good for the health. But thanks for setting us all straight. lol

I generally go EMT.

I only accept or use another form of payment if the item is something I really want to buy or want to sell and the seller/ buyer will not consider EMT as payment or receipt of payment.

EMT is superior to all other current forms of payment at the moment, and at least 90% of the CGN'ers I have dealt with use EMT over other forms of payment.

Just my .02.

I'd do EMT, but my small-town bank (and I don't think any of the other Alberta Credit Unions) are set up for it. OTOH, I can show up to my bank (thankfully I work decent hours, and the boss is pretty flexible when it comes to shop days) get an MO, Bank Draft or Certified Cheque for free, pop over to the post office across the street and ExpressPost it across Canada in 3 days, tracked and insured for a couple of bucks. Total cost to me over and above the purchase amount is generally a dollar or two in gas in the summer (I love the mileage of my bike) and then the 10 bucks or so (most I've ever paid) for ExpressPost.

Option 2 is fairly convoluted: Go to bank, withdraw cash (Max amount for me via the cash machine is $500) drive back into city, go to g/f's bank, deposit into g/f's account, have her send EMT for me. Costs me an afternoon and a lot more gas.

Yes, I could switch banks, but I've been dealing with my hometown Credit Union since I was a kid. I'm on first name basis with the managers, loans officers, and the senior tellers.

He wasn't nearly as angry sounding as your first post was, Sally... you should work on that, it's not good for the health. :)
LOL

Cut and paste from the Interac website:

Losses

Customers will not be liable for losses resulting from circumstances beyond their control that are related to the payment transaction. This includes losses resulting from technical errors, system problems or fraud. In such cases, a customer must make a claim for losses incurred and if the claim is determined to be valid, the customer will be reimbursed by their Financial Institution.

Actually, many Credit Unions in Alberta and across Canada do have EMT. Mine does for sure and I'm surprised yours doesn't since I thought they were all affiliated. (?) Other than a poor description and no pics, nothing turns me away from an ad more than: "not set up for EMT - MO only". For me, someone who accepts EMT and will pay by EMT is a big advantage.

The Certified Cheque was a forgery... The bank caught it (10 days later)... But I was waiting on clearance and had not shipped the gun yet. The money order was also a fake... In that case I had shipped the product, but the US Postal service was apparently embarassed enough by the forgery of their product and they covered the face value of the money order... But it took six months.

Thanks!

It took bank TEN days to figure out that certified cheque was fake?! WOW!

From that experience, one would have to reason that certified cheque is no better than ordinary personal cheque...

You would of thought that bank employees would be able to recognize forged certified cheques on the spot?!
Or in the worst case, have them call you in 1-3 days with bad news, so that you can take an appropriate action.

People who use the internet as a shopping tool shouldn't be so surprised when internet payment methods are asked for. It's not unfair at all - it's your choice to keep up or get out of the way.
