The NEW KING is taking off!

I have never owned a .375 rifle of any kind and have only fired a .375 Big Bore Winchester 94 but that doesn’t count as a real .375. I will someday soon buy or have one made and my cartridge choice will be based in no small part on some of what I’ve read on Gunnutz. This place is a great resource of real shooters experiences. And if a person can sift through the BS a lot can be learned!!

I’ve owned and shot magnum rifles for 3 decades now. In that time I’ve learned what I like and what works for me. Like most experienced shooters here I started my magnum love affair with belted magnums and progressed to non-belted ones. That’s because I am not a wildcatter and leave the cartridge designing to people smarter than me. For me 2 things are important in a hunting bolt action rifle. Smooth feeding and efficient bolt operation. The 375H&H is a belted case with long tapered case. In all the previous posts only one thing was mentioned that mattered to me and that was Ardent’s stating how nicely the H&H ejected even with the dusty conditions. Ejection can really matter when you hunt critters that will hunt you right back! Whether in Africa or anywhere else. And the 375H&H’s place in history is more than assured. I am well aware of the killing power of the H&H having read anything I could get my hands on about safaris.

But I’ve also followed Gatehouse’s posts here on Gunnutz about the Ruger with great interest. Since shooting beltless magnums I’ve really come to like their smoother feeding from a magazine without the belts bumping together. I know it’s a small thing to mention. But I’ve also embraced the idea of shorter and more efficient cases leading to better accuracy potential by headspacing on the shoulder instead of a belt. As far as the incredible number of loads available for the H&H vs the Ruger as a hand loader like hundreds of others here it means little if anything in my choice of round. I do like shooting my 300RUM but because it’s usually not at dangerous game I don’t care about the longer bolt throw it has but I might if something big was rushing at me to stomp or bite me.

So in the end I have to go with the .375 Ruger as my choice for the first 375 thumper rifle I will own. It is an efficient and accurate cartridge that embraces the new wave of beltless magnums. I highly doubt we will ever see any new factory magnum cartridges based on belted cases ever again. For those of you that love the nostalgia angle I can respect that but it means little to me when a new rifle is the topic. Nostalgia is for a gun that is handed down to a young’n from dad or grandpa as an heirloom. Those are family history and for the love of God do not refinish them! Enjoy them for what they are.

375 RUGER, “Meet the new King, same as the old King.” The Who

What would really be nice is if Lapua made brass for it... all the powerful alterations one could do using the finest, strongest brass...

458 - 375 Ruger
416 - 375 Ruger
35 - 375 Ruger
338 - 375 Ruger
30 - 375 Ruger
7mm - 375 Ruger

The 376 Steyr is another great beltless 375 that performs close enough to the H&H that the difference isn't worth a mention. But the Ruger is a North American offspring and will do fine here.

Excellent post Dennis ! My thoughts exactly....this warrants further discussion.

The infection is spreading. :p

Safe bet Lapua wont be making brass for the dirty little 375 booger.

I heard rumors they were going to start making Ultra Mag brass!
Production starts February 29 2011.

D'oh I just figured out what this post is really about. Gate's real name is Gatekeeper.....aka Gatehouse to keep his true idenity hidden while he trolls among the great umwashed masses, looking for new recruits to induct into his cult. The cult of the placebo king.....aka 375 Ruger. Nice ruse there Gate.....very nice ruse!

I wasn't gonna post anymore in this thread, but I can't.....help....myself....

Aw Hell! The NEW KING!

Or something like that.......

Ok, that young fella behind the dead Buffalo has me wondering what he's doing with his right hand. And his clever looking grin ain't helping!

Congrats on a wicked looking Buff!

The only other truck I would add to that mix would be the original power-wagon. Not the new power-paint-wagon, but the old tank. Same attributes as the cornbinder.

Joe, Here is the one you are talking about.
A 1947 model. with the 19 inch wheels and power driven winch with 3/8 cable. Actually, as soon as I put the camera away, we strung out the winch cable!

Salty said--"Nice truck H4831, that ol girl would be worth some bucks if she alive and in that shape today.''

Well Salty, would you believe she is alive today and in maybe better shape!
Two nephews, brothers, completely rebuilt it. One of the brothers died, as just a young man. The other brother donated the truck to the Prince George Railway and Loggers Museum, as a memory to his brother, my nephew.
It is on display at the Museum.

H4831, that is one fantastic old truck.

Salty, I loved the story you had about the school bus and the '66 Chevy!

See, this thread wasn't completely useless... :p
