The NEW KING is taking off!

Not a water buffalo (an unrelated, docile asian bovid), this monster's the ill mannered Cape Buffalo, and prrrretty sure the results would look... identical. :D For what it's worth, I'll take the 98 years of proven success, greased lightening feeding, hot climate extraction, lower pressure, and dust tolerance of the H&H when I'm facing that guy at a stone's throw. ;)

The new King... Well I have this plain jane Savage in 300 win mag I only bought it cheep as it's a left handed action. Now I was musing over what .375 caliber to rebarrel it too and I did come up with the 375 Ruger. Problem is I don't know if I can find a barrel for my savage action... anyone. Oh and I have a new 300 Win Mag take off barrel if anyone is interested.

Fantastic! Just curious if you used a compressed load or backed off a bit on account of the heat?

Actually I didn't push things at all, ran just 63.0grs of H4895 under the 300gr Barnes TSX, a very moderate load (and another reason why I'm not chasing the last ounce the .375 Ruger can offer, though my H&H will out run the Ruger with 300 grainers if one feels the twisted need to do so). Ran about 2,500fps, and extracted very well in mid 30's temp wise. H4895's also extremely consistent over temp spreads, as I tested the load in -25º, and used it in 35º heat.

I tried RL 17 for the first time yesterday in the NEW KING....

20" barrel, 300gr Accubonds at 2725 fps, zero pressure signs. I backed off anyway.:)

I am not going to load it past 2600fps with 300gr until some actual RL 17 data comes out.:p

It was funny, recoil was noticeable, but not punishing, and no pressure signs, primer pockets stayed tight...But no pressure tested data to work from, either:runaway:

Although I don't know what 2725fps can do that 2575fps can't do!:p

Gatehouse, have you tried IMR 4007SSC with the 270 TSX's? My dies should be coming this week and Im looking for a good powder to start with my King

No, but H4350 produces great accuracy and velocity in my King with 260Accubonds and 270gr TSX

Once again, working up a load with TSX bullets was a pleasure. 6 different powder charges went into a group just over 1.5" at 100 yards.

I figured I would try a group with the max reccomended charge of 83.5gr, which gave me a .60 group with an average velocity of 2730fps.

I bet I could have easily got to 2800fps or more...I wasn't seeing ANYTHING in the form of pressure signs, if I didn't have a chronograph (or didn't know how to pay attention to what Mr. Chronograph was saying) a guy might mistakenly blow himself up without getting any pressure signs!:p

I'll wait for some published data before blowing my self up;)

Here is a pic of one of the targets-

Load work up with 4 different powder charges. 3 in the same hole, 1 flyer (which I knew was a flyer even as I yanked on the tirgger!)

Rl 17 and the Accubond bullets seem to like each other.

My .375 Ruger is built on a JC Higgins M50(FN) action with a 21.5" McGowan barrel.

I've done some chronographing with the following results(all velocities are a three shot average):

Nosler 260 gr AB with RL15(these are Nosler site loads)
72 gr - 2726 fps
74 gr - 2811 fps
76 gr - 2873 fps

Pretty much the same velocities as the Nosler Manual. Interestingly, my best accuracy was with the 72 gr load - same as the Nosler results.

I've also done a bit of testing with the Hornady 270 gr SPIL and RL17. Alliant states that RL17 has a similar burn speed as IMR4350 so I started well below Hodgdon's minimum load for IMR4350 and worked up to just below Hodgdons maximum load for IMR4250. I didn't have any adverse pressure signs but I'll be staying around at 80 grs max because accuracy was excellent up that point then it went to hell.

75 gr - 2494 fps
76 gr - 2546 fps
77 gr - 2595 fps
78 gr - 2656 fps
79 gr - 2673 fps
80 gr - 2698 fps
81 gr - 2751 fps
82 gr - 2801 fps

Nice, very nice, especially with some of the bigger calibers. Curious though, you shoot four shot groups??

That certainly is a moderate and prudent load for the heat.

I am getting very near 2800 fps with 80 grs. of IMR4350 under the 300 TSX. It shows no pressure signs or extraction issues. I am fortunate to have a long chamber that allows seating the big 300's out a bit further. I shall soon test it out on the azz of a black bear.:)

Chrony shows 2750ish fps with Federal blue box 270 gr roundnose.

Best of all, she is a 375 H&H that is a great pleasure to shoot, load, cycle and handle.

For hunting rifles I usually shoot 3 shot groups.

IN this case, I shot one round, loaded another and shot it. I couldn't see it on the paper, even through my spotting scope. I was thinking "Did I completely miss the paper? The velocity variance isn't too much?"

SO I walked down and couldn't see another hole, then looked at the first one closely, and you could just barely make out the second bullet hole.

So I walked back and made another round, sat down and thought "I wonder what is going ot happen?" and then proceeded to yank the shot!

So I made another round, and shot it into the ragged hole you see there.
