WARNING: Critical flaw in FNS pistol

Lee3444 the issues is not that you never have the gun loaded unless it is pointed down range. The issue is the only time you don't and the gun goes off. Murphy lives and he lives in all of us.

FN should have recalled all of the pistols and had them either corrected or offered a replacement. It looks to me like when FN found out about the issues they just quit making the gun and when their dealers found out the gun had issues, they collectively just put them on sale to unsuspecting gun owners. If someone were to get hurt due to the corporate decision I hope they get their butts sued off.

It would be interesting to hear what the Canadian Distributor was told, if anything, and what prompted the gun going on sale.

Take Care

Bob
The issue only happens when the trigger is fully pressed to the rear. Who the hell would be pressing the trigger fully to the rear while pointing the gun anywhere else but downrange?

Just heard back from Grech Outdoors, they say they have the replacement parts in stock and will ship out immediately, seems they may have had a heads up from FN?

You don't have to send your gun to them, have them NOT fix the problem, hold the gun for 6 months, and then not return your phone calls? Thats about all I've heard about warranty work through Gretch...

I hope that by sending us the new parts and us having to install said parts, we will not lose the warranty by tampering with the pistols.

The service bulletin came out in Dec 2018, so I suppose FNH have given sufficient notice.

Since my pistols do not have the safety issue per my testing, should I keep the old firing pins or bin them?

For the most part I can see where the concern is if the pistol is in the role of a duty gun; getting into a scuffle and the need to get shots off.

Ironically enough though, I just watched a video from one of the main gun channels out there, in regards to getting the muzzle away from the target (the body of the person attacking) so that you don't cause the pistol to go out of battery before pulling the trigger. You will have a dead trigger and have to rack the slide in order to get any striker pistol back in the fight. The only time you put the muzzle into the target is of you have a revolver. Food for thought.

Maybe FNS issues are actually useful lol you'll get the shot off in the event the pistol is out of battery

All joking aside...

... For those of us who don't use the pistol in a duty role or self defense role, I just don't seeing it being that big of an issue to forfeit the gun. Two very specific things have to happen in order to create the issue. If we were legally allowed to carry I would run this pistol.

I wouldn't mind picking up a discounted FNS 9L in black. I'll definitely have to keep an eye out on EE lol

Edit:

I have two FNS9s by the way, one is the regular and the other is a stainless long side. I had a chance to pull them out and try to induce the issue. I was successful.

My findings. The first is that it has to be quite precise when out of battery in order to casue the issues. We are talking like 1 to 2 mm. I could not casue the issue beyond that distance when out of battery. The second is that the FNS9 behaved exactly as shown in the video, and the long slide behaved a bit differently. I could casue the 1st issue: out of battery, pull the trigger, keep the finger on the trigger, and allow the slide to go forward, you can clear as day hear the stiker release. The 2nd was different with the long slide. Same set up as before, but then take the finger off of the trigger and allow the slide to go forward... I didn't have to jar it, the striker released on its own, but it was delayed by a second or so after the slide returned forward. Very interesting.

All that being said, I still don't feel it's a bit issue due to how far the slide has to be out of battery to cause the issues to arise. It's not like the gun is going to go off on it own; two things need to happen to casue the issues. I run both of mine with holsters and have full confidence.

Most of the ones I have seen have been in stainless and in .40 as they were really cheap a couple of years ago. A lot of dealers had them brand new in the $400-500 range and I think they may have been dumped onto the Canadian market.

I have noticed that too!! A lot of. 40s around. I haven't sent any 9mm all black long slides in a while

The only long slide all black 9 I have seen ever is my wife's, I've seen a lot of the stainless but I've never seen another black one,,,didn't realize that until I actually thought about it lol, can't even recall seeing one on the EE?, anyway it does look killer in all black :)

Hopefully luck will be on my side lol!!

I just tried both scenarios with my fns9 (unloaded) couldn't get it to fire. I checked the website and it said my gun was also affected. So not sure if I should even pay this much attention, definitely don't want to send it away for six months.

Checked mine with the serial and it’s affected. Sent an email to the distributor for the next step. But it’s no duty gun, so no big deal for me.

Glad to hear Grech is sending these. I hope that send includes install instructions. I'd hate to see FN relying on YouTube install videos.

The slide has to be out of battery in such a precise position in order for the pistol's issue to arise. I won't worry too much. It does sound like Gretch Outdoors is sending the strikers out without any fees. If that is the case, I will go through it, but if we are required to pay anything, then I'm not going to be bothered, the gun still functions reliably.

This happened once with my Glock 17 Gen 5. I had some of that cheap Winchester Forged steel cased 9mm. I was just shooting through a 10 round magazine when after a few rounds the trigger locked up in the forward position. I noticed the slide was back about 1/8" so I pushed the slide forward and it fired the round with the trigger still in the forward position. Before anyone asks yes the firearm was still pointed at the target downrange. This is the only issue I have had with my Glock 17 Gen 5 in approximately 5000 rounds.

Ok, guess my FNS is working to Perfection then!
